He says he can force himself into the first team but if we get promoted we will probably bring in extra cover for Richardson so he will be 3rd in the pecking order. I can't see him playing many more league games for us - only if he gets fit and Frazer is out for a while
Confused. Great last season, but don't see him having any future if we go up. If we don't go up he will just be bench-warming IMO.
Don't get me wrong, he's a great player but I think it would have been right for him to move on and garuntee himself first team football everyweek.
Thought he played amazing against boro this season, he has the quality but Frazer has been DC so far.
I think this is a cheeky deal, but could be quiet clever in the long run. Personally, he won't play much at all possibly the odd cup game. But who do the players always say has the best banter? Creates the best atmosphere amongst the players? Butterfield. So I think they are keeping him to keep the morale going and when the going gets tough he's the sort of person to put people back on track. Watching most Saints Player videos you can always tell that Butterfield is the joker and I reckon he's just a good player to have around the club. Plus I wouldn't be surprised if his wages have been cut, he knows he wants to play at the top and at his age he may not want to settle down again at a different club. What do you guys reckon?
totally agree, i think hes signed a further year because of off the pitch he can help out like how you said
Surprised, but Nigel must reckon he's a decent back-up that we hope we won't need. Saves looking for or signing another player.
but if he is under contract then he can not walk at the end of the season, we still have the option of getting something for him
Good theory! He's an experienced, half decent back up. Also how many players with that much influence on the dressing room will be happy to bench warm? Good little extension there.
I think it's a form of insurance, could be mentoring the youngsters, he has been training with the main squad, could be worth a risk?
I think SL Saint has hit the nail on the head. Butterfield is not integral on the pitch for us right now but you never hear a bad word about him, everyone says he is a huge character and the youngsters seem to like him too. You need people like him in the fold even if they don't start. I think he'd quite like a last shot at the PL and at least by being here he has that chance.
Butterfield is a consistent performer, and I think he has been very unlucky to have had much of a look in this season - him and Stephens will be battling it out next season for Richardson understudy imo
Yep, In think this is a good deal. Quality squad player. He knows he isn't the first player at RB, but when I saw him play earlier this season I couldn't really fault his display too much. IIRC,he got an assist too. The good banter is a bonus.
