Hope I'm not speaking to soon but I believe finally Evans appears to have regained a certain measure of confidence and at last is showing some of the ability to which he a few years ago had shown. Looks more composed on the ball than he has for a while, passing well out of defence, actually winning more headers and showing strength but what is very interesting is his ability and desire to take the ball and attack the opposition defence.

Here's hoping Jonny continues to play with confidence and the fans don't get on his back. <ok>

Never been convinced he will be first choice, always believed he's a great addition to the squad.

Rafael has been fantastic recently imo and fabio looks a bit indisciplined, a bit like Rafael did last season. Hope he can get more game time because we look to have a great young defence waiting for their time.

Jonny will never be first choice so long as Vidic is fit and at the club. However Rio's time is surely limited and with Smalling and Jones struggling at times with injuries, Evans rediscovery of his form is most welcome. I defended him during most of his poor performances but even I was getting cold feet <laugh>.

I missed kick off last night and then didn't notice Evans until he was shaking hands at the end.

Speaks volumes as he can't have put a foot wrong. He's nowhere near as bad as some would make out and with a run of games he's looking the part.

He did make one mistake in the first half, a misplaced pass which gave Ajax a chance but apart from that he played well and never looked under pressure.

Evans Used to live 20 minutes away from me, getting to be a sound centre back, Fergie has serious faith so fair play to him!

I thought Fabio was really good last night. Stood off a bit more and timed a number of tackles very well. He's no Evra yet when it comes to attacking but partly that's due to him being right footed and it was an away game.

I'm not convinced yet. He has improved on last season and the regular games with a fixed partner (Ferdinand) can only help.

However, they were the CB paring for the drubbing by Man City, the CL k.o. to Basel (after Vidic got injured) and the FA Cup k.o. to Liverpool.

He was tidy against Liverpool last week and last night against Ajax, but lets be fair, the defence wasn't overly tested in either game.

During the Liverpool game, when they scored, he jumped to clear the ball and missed completely. It bounced off Ferdinand and dropped for Suarez.

That's kind of my point Tucker. He did make mistakes earlier on in the season and in crucial games, however his confidence appears to have improved as has his performances. The two obviously go hand in hand. He is getting better and playing alongside the same CB and goalkeeper may be helping him.

    Enjoy the match last night?

This the problem. People assign blame for a game on a single person and overlook the mistakes made by players such as Rooney or Hernandez or anyone else. Why don't people blame Rooney for us getting knocked out? He missed an open goal against Basel? How many chances did we squander against Benfica and the two games against Basel? It's been like, Evans was playing in that game we lost, so we need to cite that game. De Gea was playing in this game when we lost, we need to cite that game when critising him. Using De Gea as an example, people will say he conceded 3 at Stamford Bridge that's evidence of him being poor this season. As always statistics don't tell the full picture.

He is definitely good enough and he has showed it in enough games. If he adds consistency then he will be a sound option. And to be fair, consistency will improve as he gets older and wiser. His peak is potentially a few years away yet.

    It was a strange night.

I sat in the bottom tier with Ajax fans. United played towards us in the first half, so that proved to be a little disappointing. Some Ajax fans were singing 'There's only one Luis Suarez' when the players lined up before kick-off and odd random abuse at Rooney.

Needless to say, it was very satisfying when we did score, but I didn't move a muscle!

Did Evans play as the right side CB last night (Didnt see the game)? His form has been v good since he started playing there. Maybe just coincidence.
He seems more aggressive in challenging for the ball and more composed with the ball.

He has been playing at a consistent level for a while now. I remember when Evans was a nervous wreck quite a while back, but seems to be much more composed when on the ball and has cut out his silly mistakes.

    I hope this continues.

Yes he was predominately more on the right. Functioned well.

Remember when Evans was ahead of Gerard Pique in the pecking order at CB, who subsequently left because he wasn't getting playing time? Evans is starting to like he could become that player.

I see a lot of you think he's only good enough to ever be a squad player, which I suppose there is reason in that. Personally I'd like to see him become a player worthy of being first choice CB at United. SAF seems to rate him highly, so wouldn't surprise me if the potential to be a world class defender is there.

Well here's for hoping anyways <cheers>
