Morning all Out and about today but before I go thought I'd ask about the best Saints gaols you have seen. Was it a MLT special or? Mine was Channon's Saints V Liverpool - 24 April 1982. IMO The greatest Saints goal ever scored. God we had a hell of a team that year! For those of you too young to remember it take a look at YouTube.
Delap v Spurs was pretty special. For pure wild celebration, Henri Camara's last gasp winner against Norwich the year we got relegated was pretty special too. Beattie once scored an absolute screamer of a free kick away to Chelsea. Marsden away to Ipswich. No-one was taking the ball off him on that run! I'm purposefully not mentioning MLT, althought if I had to pick one, it would be his free kick at home to Wimbledon where he flicked the ball up before planting a looping volley in their top corner.
Marion Pahars vs Man Utd, when he nut-megged Jap Staam. Matty's against Newcastle in the FA Cup, when he chipped the defender then volleyed past the keeper. But the one that brought the most pleasure to the most people is the one that's on the wall in the concourse at Wembley; The one that went; "McCalliog...to Stokes...who's onside..."
Le Tissier v Blackburn away. Le God takes the ball for a spin, ties the Blackburn midfielder knots and cracks a fierce lob; ball flies in to the net, Tim Flowers the post. as he ambles the short distance to back to his half, he turns to decdicate the Saints support with a causal point in their direction
Many of le tissier too many to choose 1, but in recent times it'll have to be Lamberts at stadium MK i think it was his 3'rd (scored a hatrick) from miles out staright from a punt for the GK
MLT's goal against Norwich at the Dell back in 1989/90 when we beat them 4-1. His 2nd goal was sublime beating about 4 players.
So many great goals, especially as we had the pleasure of watching some great players (won't list as wouldn't like to omit anyone) but my personal favourite will be the one that gets us promotion to the PL (don't even care if it's a scuffer like Sharp's against Burnley).
1-0... Southampton Go Mad..! Just completed your commentary, or I should say, the legendary David Coleman's. My DVD copy of the game has ITV's Brian Moore doing the commentary. It's just not the same.
I agree, that was awesome!!! One of the best I've seen was Chris Baird's against Cardiff (I think, may be wrong) where we had a free kick about 20 yards into the Northam half, it was played square on to Baird instead of into the penalty box and BHAM! Back o' the net!! I think the best all-time Saints goal though has to go to MLT vs Newcastle where he chips it over about 3 players and slots it home. Too many others to mention......!
For some reason this thread has made me reminisce about the all too short Le Tissier/Ekelund days. I have a memory of those two pulling Man City(?) to pieces......(but then I am getting old and the old memory isn't what it once was...!)
In terms of being at the game, the Henri Camara goal v Norwich you mentioned would have to do it. Best saints game I've ever been to, could take a long time to better it.
For me it has to be MLT v Newcastle - the first one where he flicks it over the player and then sidesteps it it. CLosely followed by his second one where he flicks it up and buries it in the net (I may have the goal order the wrong way round!)
MLT Soton at home vs Newcastle 93/94 season, juggles the ball over two players then lobs it into the net. The other goal he scored in that game was none too shabby neither.
Chris Baird vs Cardiff was a great one a few years back, the old Burley days... free kick, laid off to bairdy from 30 yards and smacked it into the top right hand corner.
Le Tiss half volley against Liverpool afyer about 20 seconds, he absolutley smacked it. It was feb, and snowing I think. Also love our goal against Boro this season after how many passes? Disgusting that it didn't get more coverage by the UK footy world.
