I was brought up in an area of north-west London where there was no obvious choice of football allegiance. Just about every one of my friends/classmates supported a different team. My dad supported Southampton (where he'd been brought up) and my mum was - for some reason I've never fathomed! - an Arsenal fan. The first football match I ever went to was when my dad took me to a Wartime Cup Final (yes, really!) between Chelsea and Millwall. Chelsea won 2-0. So being a little lad, I naturally decided to support the winners. And Tommy Lawton, their famous centre-forward, became my instant hero. So I wrote to ask for his autograph. Never heard a dickie-bird in reply, from him or the club. So I decided, being a little lad with a bit of spirit, to find an alternative team to support. I looked at the league tables, and there in the (old) Second Division was a team with a name I instantly fell in love with! And that's how I came to support Tottenham Hotspur. And in direct contrast to that other club, when I wrote to ask for the team's autographs, I received them by return of post. So I reckon I've supported Spurs for sixty-seven years now. Can anyone beat that? And I'll stop there or this could become a very lengthy post. And I need time to start writing my next poetic prediction for the Arsenal game.......... As ever, COYS! Oh - and somebody please let Spurf know I've responded to his request for silent surfers to emerge from behind the curtains and post on this thread.....
WHY was your response NOT in verse? Audrey, it leaves me a little terse. The poet laureate of not606 and we don't get one of his licks. We wait all week for his prediction. When he posts with proper diction No one else suffers from your affliction. So don't make it worse Just stick to bloody verse
audrey thacakery can i smak u please i made lots of spelling mistakes in order to raise the stakes i hope this keeps you busy im off to the Nicholson arms for a fizzy!
Come on Audrey we know you are there Now is not the time to stand and stare So get that pen working and make a reply It is you Audrey upon who we rely
No choice, my old man took me to see a game in 61 age 4, put down the front next to the tunnel where the players came out and was picked up at the end of the game. my grand father and great grand father supported the Spurs and now my son supports them so it must be in the blood. Proud boast I never missed a first team game home or away from season 1976 to 1981. Tottenham till i die
My reputation's buried in the turf: I've just received a telling-off from Spurf! How can I ever clear my sullied name? Where can I hide? How can I end this shame? (If I were Wenger, I'd just shift the blame!) I wanted just to write that one in prose - I'll have to think again now, I suppose. And Spurf, my friend, I really think you oughter Be gentle with a loyal old supporter! (But honestly - and this I mean - not half! - Your witty contribution made me laugh!)
That is some record Alfie. It would cost a small fortune to beat that at todays prices. Travel & Tickets.
Next season will be number 59 for me but I think you are the champion,Audrey, sir (I hope)!!!!!! I can remember my stepdad taking me to The Lane sometime in the 40's but the twit let me go to the toilet by myself and,of course,I lost him! They used to get 50,60 even 70 thousand in the ground in those days. Mum probably wanted to kill him!(Maybe)!
Spurf, Four of us used to share an old cortina and we shared all costs and used to take it in turns driving,I am a mechanic and still remember changing the clutch the night before a game at old trafford. good days
My Grandad grew up walking distance from WHL, so he passed it onto my Dad, who has passed it on to me. My Mum and her side of the family are all Gooners, so I have a very lucky escape!
although i lived in Sutton ,i became a Spurs fan because when i was getting into football, the name Hotspur was different from United and City etc. and i liked the Nickname Spurs and it went from there
