It's shocking guys, yappy if you managed a team you'd be sacked within a week with tactics like this. WOW.

If anybody is watching Milan demolishing the Gooners you will see how 4-4-2 with a diamond in midfield can work, with a class holding player like Van Bommel. But you need everybody to understand their roles, work really hard and keep discipline. If Diakite is up to it it seems to me the perfect way to get the best out of Adel, at the top of the diamond behind Zamora and Cisse.
Seriously, Milan are taking the piss now.....

SB, I am watching that game, and totally agree. Milan have looked brilliant in this game.

It is certainly a system which for me would work better than a flat 4-4-2 with the players we have. At the moment our midfield is far too easy to play through.

And looking at the Milan left back Antonini, who didn't give Walcott a kick, I suspect that Taiwo was too good to be second choice but not good enough to get in ahead of him, hence loan.

Well ,this is the same Arsenal that did lose to Blackburn and 8-2 to ManU in the start of the season. Milan is good but Arsenal are playing well below their par and because of that it is so easy for Ibrahimovic ,Prince and even lazy player like Robinho. Hope they play that Djorou against us......

You can only beat what's in front of you Igor. This is not a great Milan team, but they have drawn with Barca, supposedly the best club team ever ( but I would argue that the Milan team of van Basten was as good) twice this season. Better organized, better discipline and this evening, full of energy.

No, there would have to be a more solid central midfield player or two like Diakite and /or Barton who I mentioned, than Yappy had, but that formation 3-5-2 could work with the right players in there.

Isn't a major part of the choice of formation, choosing a formation that suits best the strengths of the players you have? I have had the growing feeling since MH took over that the players are not familiar with the formation that they are asked to play in, maybe this started when Neil started to move away from 4 2 3 1 in the autumn, but against Blackburn in particular there seemed an awkwardness / unfamiliarity with how they were supposed to play. This was especiallly noticeable on the left side where Taiwo and Traore seemed to get in each others way rather than comlpiment each other! Perhaps there isn't room for both in the same 11.

Hope they are sorting this in sunny Portugal.

I think you'll find that most players are pretty familiar with 4-4-2!!!

If we play with the energy of Milan and keep Van Persie quiet, absolutely. I'd fancy Cisse against their CBs.

Think we have always looked happier with the 4 2 3 1 we played last season and early this, even with all the new players coming in who I suppose as wel,l would have played 4 4 2. Only game I recall where we played convincingly, and looked solid and well organised in a 4 4 2, was home to Citeh.

Why would we even want you supporting our team? You give up so easily. Can't learn, have not learned, will never learn.

It's OK if you have never played any professional football. I understand how hard it must be for you to not actually be on the field playing in a shifting formation.

You make it sound as though the 5-3-2 STAYS like that going forward as well defending. Really, is that how it is for you? Brilliant.

5-3-2 is just a selective way of placing what I prefer to have in the middle back, that is why I put 3 strong CBs there.
You want me to re-draw how it would look during actual play? Formation is, after all, just a way to say that one would want certain players in the line-up to start.

    -------Ferdinand-----Gabbidon---------
    ----------------Onouha------------------
    Young----------------------------Traore
    SWP------------Taraabt----------Taiwo
    --------Mackie-----------Zamora-------

until Cissé comes back and until HH gets proper fit.

I personally would not play Taiwo, he has not impressed at all as far as defending, but he seems eager enough to go forward, and having that triangle of Tarbs-Traore-Taiwo would work quite nicely behind Zamora, so long as Traore and Taiwo don't step on each other but help each other (which I would love to see, but I am seriously not sure about Taiwo).
Switch that to the other side, if SWP is getting beaten or being wasted, take him off and bring on Smith.
At the back Onouha can sit in front of the back 2, to squeeze the play to the wings to let the wingbacks hassle.
Then you can even switch formation (!!!!, wow, the horror!!!!), and shift and react as needed. If the manager can't even plan that, then yeah, we are in serious trouble.

May be that's all MH knows. Really. I've always said his teams have attacked decently have looked fairly clueless defending, as if they do not know who should mark whom and how.
Hopefully he's experimenting with the team's formations and line-ups while on holiday in Portugal.
