The winger has taken the Premier League by storm, scoring three goals in 10 appearances since Martin OâNeill promoted him from reserve team obscurity. He is earning almost £4,000 a week at the moment and that will rise to more than £10,000 as he emerges as a key player in Sunderlandâs future. McClean was signed from Derry City in the summer for £350,000 as a development player, rather than a fully-fledged regular. OâNeill is convinced his impressive form will be sustained, a fact backed up by his superb finish against Arsenal at the weekend. The Sunderland boss said: âSometimes you look for a dip in players who have just come in, but there is no sign of that with James. âHe has been splendid. He works tirelessly for us, taking top quality players on. Where he gets the energy from I do not know.â Good move, i'd suggest an automatically built in double of the new pay if he sustains it, as it's still a pittance by Premier League standards. Richly deserved.
Surely it should be more than that? £10k a week for a regular PL winger who is quite good is very low. Although if he's happy with that wage then it's alright I suppose.
That's what I thought, but as I said, i'd imagine there's automatic increases in place. Despite the fact he's been outstanding, I guess it would be a bit naive to give him a 4-year 30k a week contract after 10 games.
I hope so both sess & McClean need to be given long term deals Also Catts contract will up soon he should get one as well. & i hope Gordon proves his fitness to get a new deal.

The rise in scale is irrelevant when some players are probably performing less than he is but getting paid double or triple his wages. He's a good winger who is scoring goals and contributing just as well as a £30k winger would.
The relevance is that the club and the player are happy to give/receive £15000 per week. Why should the club pay £30000 if all parties are happy.
1). It's £10k a week 2). I'm just wondering why it isn't more, as I would have thought that Sunderland would want to be more competitive to drive off potential suitors.
but the thing is, he was an unknown when he signed for us so £4000 pw is very decent, he has only had a handfull of games at this level. we (sunderland) can't just go handing out £30,000 ppw contracts to people who have had a few good games. so imo £10,000 is about right, and we can talk to him again at the end of the season if he is still performing...
