Crass bit of journalism, he had the nerve to write "With Radhi Jaidi and Jose Fonte doing their best Laurel and Hardy impressions" and yet no mention of the CLOWN Pearce being made to look a right chump when outsmarted by Lambert to lay on Barnards goal
I beg to differ. My understanding of the offside rule is that there has to be an element of control in the ball comimg from an opposition player e.g. an underhit back pass, or a header back to the keeper that doesn't carry and goes into the path of an aopposition player in an offside position. There is absolutely no element of control in a rebound struck against our own player!
It also fuels hatred. If it had really kicked off on saturday they would have had blood on their hands. They will probably print in the paper that the 8 arrested (all Bournemouth fans i understand, are scum & not welcomed at the club. Victor Meldrew has a lot to answer for.
I think it's interesting to read the responses to the article of the Echo site. Many of the Bournemouth fans think that the article is really quite pathetic and just an attempt to stir things up.....and sell papers. Before the Internet, we would not have seen this stuff. It was for local consumption. I am willing to bet that according to French reports, our archers were dead lucky at Agincourt!
You can only be offside if the ball is played by a teammate, so it had to be a goal. Probably the best example of this was in the 2006 World Cup, Korea v Switzerland: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnTNhHr0EA0
Never understand this hatred of Adkins. He never slags off other teams. The worst he'll say of any team is that they are hardworking (translation:talentless) and honest (do the best they can considering they are useless). Similarly, he never criticises Saints players much in public. He's hardly contentious.
Thank you for identifying this! The same incident happened in the Manchester United vs. Arsenal (I think it was for Van Persie) and offside was immediately given. What mystefied me was on Solent they said that the goal should have stood, but I would have thought that they would pick up the fact that you have identified! Ultimately I do see it as making a slight difference, as another clean sheet against Bournemouth would have been just splendid!
Likewise I am sure that 'The Saxon Times' claimed that the Norman cavalry at Hastings were incredibly lucky that the English infantry right flank decided to chase them down the hill! Another tangent, but as it stands (according to the Egg sport) I believe we are channel champions
This has to be a classic of a thread. Serious debate with well constructed responses in the main to previous posters views. My take is that we notice the biased reporting from the Bournemouth Echo more because our Southampton version fails miserably to foster a similar relationship with the club or the fans. The Pompey News has, as previously stated, always been totally behind the club and has a remarkable record in that aspect of journalism. The article in the Bournemouth rag hurts more simply because our version has done nothing in comparison on behalf of our club. Rather than support the club it is more likely to have a dig against the club and it's owners or chairman.
This is the case. A deflection from an opposition player and it is offside. The reason the goal was given on Saturday was not because of the deflection, but because one of our own players had the original clearence that was then deflected by another of our players. The player the ball deflected off didn't play the Boscombe player onside it was the fact that (Hammond I think it was) had control of the ball, but cleared it against Butterfield's head. Had a Boscombe player hit it against Butterfield it would have been offside as Butterfield didn't have control of the ball. Hammond did, that's why it was quite rightly given on side. Hope this makes sense and clears it up
