Seems quite amazing on the face of it, but then Ajax's European decline has pretty much directly correlated with our European rise. Since they came 2nd in 96, they've only qualified for the group stage about 50% of the time, and only for the knockout stage on three occasions. And their best seasons in recent years were 03 and 06, which were amongst our worst seasons.
Had a good think about this this morning and unless there is something obvious I'm missing I can only remember us playing one Dutch club in my memory, PSV Eindhoven in a dull UEFA cup tie in the 80's. I think we lost on away goals by virtue of a 1-1 at home and a 0-0 away. Could be wrong. Even then it wasn't Ferguson.
We deffo played Feyenoord back in the early days of the CL, when we were in the same group as Juve I think, so 97 or 98. Thought we'd also played PSV once, but not sure - could've been a different club. EDIT: Yes, I'm 90% sure we played PSV in the group stage in 2000/01. I remember it cos the press were banging on about Ruud and how he would've joined us or been playing against us had he not been crocked. And Kezman played a blinder which convinced Abramovich to spaff a few million on him a couple of seasons later Morning bazray
Feyenoord, in the group in 1997. PSV, in the group 2000. Well done memory man. The main reason I remember the UEFA cup tie v PSV in the 80's is because I was there as a junior.
I remember the Feyenoord one cos of the reaction amongst fans to us getting Juve in the group twice in a row at a time when they were one of the strongest in Europe. Then we beat them at home and figured we'd have to get a result in Turin to top the group, but lo an behold Feyenoord beat them in Holland so we won the group regardless Then went out on away goals to ****ing Monaco
I sent you a PM yesterday, to which I've had no response. Have you started The Infinity Puzzle yet? If you have, what's it like? I haven't got round to it yet.
