ferdinand will be 33 this year, and all these injuries in recent years aren't doing him any favors.

smalling is playing with a confidence and ability that we shouldn't really be expecting to see for one so young and inexperienced. he's improving every game and was once again fantastic next to vidic yesterday.

ferdinand on his day is one of the best in the world, but i cant remember him putting in consistent performances this season like smalling has of late.

Smalling looks a v good player and at only 21 looks to have a great future. While Vidic has time left, would like at the end of next season Utd to be looking for his future replacement. Don't want to be left like the Arsenal struggling to replace CB's.

Hope so. They compliment each other superbly. Amazing to think that Rio could ever be 3rd choice. Still if we have all 3 (hoping Rio stays fit) then we will be in a fantastic situation defensively, and ready to launch another title bid.

Doubt Rio will be third choice. More likely he'll be used like Scholesy and Giggsy are - saved for the big matches when experience is vital, and Smalling will play in the rest.

Ye fair point. It is great at the minute how we can be missing our first choice central defender and not be missing him at all though. I am a massive fan of Rio, and Smalling has so much he can learn from him. As a centre half myself, these are the players i watch the most, and all 3 are unbelievable talents.

Indeed, all we need is Jonny Evans to get his confidence and form back and we'll be sorted in the centre for the next decade! <ok>
