2010 was a fantastic season for Mark. In my mind he was the driver of the season that year and only missed out on the title due to Red Bull’s refusal to put their backing behind him. (In my opinion.) 2011 couldn’t have been much more different for him than 2010. It seemed as though Red Bull had made a clear decision to put all their efforts behind their young star and left Webber high and dry, as what could be viewed as a definite number 2. His starts were appalling at times and his frustration clear. In reality… Red Bull was wise to focus their efforts. It paid off and they dominated in a truly amazing fashion. But what does this mean for Webber this season? Does he have any hope of mounting a challenge for the title? Will the changes to cars swing the pendulum back to his favor in any way or his he doomed to another year of seeing Vettel light years ahead of him again. Traditionally I was never a massive Webber fan, but in 2010 he went up massively in my estimations and I became a bit of a fan, but I fear that this could be his last season in a top flight team before RB promote one of their younger divers, leaving him to slowly slip back down the field in less competitive machinery.
I fear you're right... I really feel sorry for him missing out on the 2010 title. That really just slipped through his fingers.
True... and in some ways luck wasn't on his side there. He "may" have been able to recover and gather at least some points had he not wound up tearing the car to shreds after the initial shunt.
With the new tyres I think/hope we'll see a revitalised Webber. We were short-changed last season. Whether he can mount a title challenge depends on factors other than his own abilities, I fear.
But saying that; Vettel also retired from that race, surely that was in more ways unluckier (is that a word?) than Webber. Don't Forget after Korea, Vettel was 14 points behind Webber.
He's got a mountain to climb, no doubt! Personally I'm hoping that we get to see Webber at his best this season and really taking the fight to Vettel in the inter-team battle. I'm just not sure he'll have the tools to do it either. Not that I'm criticizing RB for that approach. It's sensible to have a clear #1.
Swings and roundabouts isn't it really? There's so many ways that you can look at results retrospectively, but at the end of they day they change nothing. Vettel taking the title lead and the title in the last race was pretty spectacular. Not trying to take anything away from that.
I would like to see mark do well, but as mentioned above its no good moaning about it while your teammate goes out and delivers the goods week in week out.
I know I'm a one eyed Webber fan, but I really hope we see a refreshed comeback for him. This is the first pre-season summer/winter where he has actually been able to have a good break unlike in the past with broken legs and post-championship loss depression. He seems happy in his interviews and with the car so far this season with the loss of the EBDs and tyres better suited to him hopefully he can close up on his teammate and have a 2010-like year. And while I don't think he is faster than Vettel he is definitely a better racer. There's no denying that Webber had a bad year last year (how many bodged pit-stops did he have?) and Vettel's performance was completely out-of-the-ordinary but he had some great moments as well. China from 18th to 3rd, Canada from 4th to 14th to 3rd and his numerous outrageous overtakes on Alonso. In short I don't care if he doesn't win the crown this year. He's still a champion to me
Well, that's the problem, eh Max. I wonder if Webber could actually beat the boy wonder, if all things were equal.
how do you know they werren't even, oh, that's right, Webber told everyone they weren't so, of course, it must be true. There's a reason why WEBBER HAS NEVER EVER WON ANY CHAMPIONSHIP AT ALL AT ANY LEVEL, he isn't up to it, and he has a tendancy to choke.
