Sad really , if there was not the stigma , they would not have felt the need to get married simply to conform .
Oscar Wilde? I usually avoid autobiographies (especially footballers) but I've actually read Le Saux's book. It's a decent read. The whole thing started after his Chelsea team mates gave him the nickname '****' for going on holiday with Ken Monkou (because that makes sense?). Soon enough players from other teams/fans/the media cottoned on to the fact that it annoyed him, and he subsequently endured a career of abuse. Really pathetic and tragic to be honest. The worst thing about that Fowler incident is that Le Saux refused to take the free kick until Fowler stopped bending over in front of him - resulting in Le Saux getting booked for time-wasting. He said he considered walking off the pitch, and probably should have to be honest.
I went on holiday with another guy just last year. To an all-inclusive hotel and spa in Turkey. Nothing gay about it.......though we did refer to it as a "gaycation".
As we are getting political on here, can we make a concerted effort to get rid of the leader of Southampton City Council, one Royston Smith, by far the biggest prat living in Hampshire these days. My reasons for getting rid of Tory control in Southampton and him in particular is that I find his policies are divisive setting council worker against resident if the bins aren't collected. I think trying to resist a pay cut, never mind seeking an increase, is reasonable enough for angst against the less than wonderful policies emanating from the head of Smith and his cronies. He is also doing his best to create hostility between Southampton and Liverpool, referring to Liverpool's cruise liner terminal being publicly funded as opposed to the privately financed Southampton facility. That may well be the case but surely Southampton has the capacity to maintain its position as the number one cruise terminal. After all it has double the number of tides Liverpool has for starters. And if Southampton can continue to provide first class facilities and services in this industry, it should welcome the challenge by Liverpool not moan about it. I know its not football but you gave me an opportunity to start.
That response is on a par with some of our more unpleasant posters and I certainly do not like being referred to as Buddy. Politeness doesn't cost and is usually very effective!
As there seems to be a bit of political debate on here perhaps we should sing the Who's song "I won't get fooled again" that included the lyrics "there's a party on the left, there's a party on the right etc. Seeing the guys writing on this particular forum it should be well known by most!
Ha Ha, I thought the title of the thread implied you were gay if you were University educated and played on the left wing, not the political left. Got worried for a minute there as I am University educated and used to play on the left years ago but thankfully as I sit on the right I can not be of gay persuasion, that and my baby boy anyway! I am sure there are many gay players in professional football but wouldn't ever come out because the abuse from the terraces would be horrendus. Fans will do anything to put a player off of their game. Look at the abuse Beckham used to get about Posh and when a player comes to St Mary's that has links with Pompey. Kevin Phillips gets sung at about his wife when ever he plays at St Mary's, and we are all Saints! Imagine if a player was openly gay, they would be crucified. Interesting that Steven Davies who was in the England Ashes test squad came out last year and it barely made the news. So is it just fooball that has the problems with homophobia?
Then I suggest you look up the term buddy.........and it certainly was not inpolite. Either way there was a point to be made!!
Good lord, my thread has provoked a slanging match between two grumpy old men! I wrote this thread with the intention of inspiring both football-related and politics-related conversation, so I have no opposition to politics being discussed here, and I don't think it's doing this forum any harm at all that there's some decent intellectual conversation springing up here.
Joe,come over to Portugal and I'll take you this festival.
I certainly do not need to look up the definition of an american slang term! It was the context within which it was used that I found offensive.
It is possible to have intellectual conversation about football you know! As for politics, there are other more suitable channels for that kind of debate, and it seems to provoke conflict more than anything else. You guys go ahead though if that's what you enjoy!
I'm with you babe. And no it doesn't. Even if I do have a rather camp-looking pink bear as my avatar, and an extreme inclination to vigorously sodomizing men. And for the record, I've met very few people who are political in my time at uni. The left-wing stereotype is quite misguided I think, although the actual student unions do tend to be very socialist in their approach. Always off to marches against free will, property, hard work and that sort of claptrap. Now the stereotype of the majority being lazy, annoying rah twats on the other hand... And yeah, the Le Saux stuff is ridiculous. Most of it instigated by Robbie Fowler, Rio Ferdinand and David Batty, all of whom appear to be quite robustly on the thick side.
I phrased it in an obviously misrepresentative way, but socialism in practice does undermine those virtues.
