Just to comment on Joe's original post; the continual nudge-nudge, wink-wink abuse that Graham Le Saux was subject to throughout his career was appalling, and was a real advert for showing the worst aspects of people behaving as sheep and with a malicious intent. I have often been appalled at people when they have the opportunity to think independently and intelligently, rather than lazily and herd-like, but no, it's easier not to step out of line. And there was always some joker willing to raise the subject again if it ever died down.

Master of Arts Degree from Southampton, socialist all my life, radio 4 listener, trades unionist, Grauniad and Times reader and I read books all the time too.

I must fit the bill but hang on a minute what about the very lovely Mrs Godders:emoticon-0115-inlov

It is a proven fact that the better educated an individual is the greater the probability that (s)he is a socialist.

The corollary of that statement is quite clear.

Anyone with a pre-defined allegiance to a political party must surely have their views questioned. It's a political party, not a football team, you don't have a tribal support for any of them. You vote for whose manifesto best appeases your personal viewpoints come election time, surely? Not voting for the same party every time regardless?

Either way I'm in University education and am somewhat left (though far from extreme either way), thus clearly I must be a raging bender.

I'm not the slightest bit surprised that the left-leaning members on this board are also the ones who have a decent grasp on spelling and grammar, and can construct coherent sentences.

Did you know that despite being a complete tool, Nick Griffin has a degree from Cambridge University?

Never been a socialist and I have a science degree. I might have been one in the past centuries though, remember that what is right wing now would have been considered left wing in the nineteenth century.

Ok Guys and gals....this is a footy Forum not a political debating Forum. Lets keep on the original posters mind set about the abuse Le Saux experienced.
Certainly there was a lot of rumours going around about Le Saux how they ever started I don't know. Most Football fans I think dismissed it as rubbish. There was and is no evidence as far as I can make it.....and even if there was....what bloody difference does it make. I cannot see how someone who is married with a couple of kids could be branded as such.
Strewth I have been reading the guardian on and off for years and never thought of it as being left wing!! As for the stated opinion that all university types are gay. Hmm in that case I had better ask my Sons and my daughters and daughters in law how come they have all produced me grand children. Hang on a minute......I attended university too.......must mean I need to discuss my sexuality too!! I wonder what Mrs BT will have to say to that?
Oh man....... there is a lot of people who engage their mouth before their brain is working isn't there? Either that or their brain is in their ass..........ahhh now... are we getting to the bottom of the matter perhaps?

Why should we be any different to the newspapers on here. The sports pages of my newspaper this morning aren't talking about sport they are focused on the issue of rascism.

Because Buddy this is a Footy Forum nothing more nothing less!!!!!!!!
Just stick to the point of the thread which is not about politics!!!!!!

Homophobia is still rife in football and I dont mean to stereotype but its probably because most involved in it arn't well educated and just go along with imature views and abuse. I feel for Le Saux but it does highlight how far we are from a situation where a gay footballer would be able to come out, in many respects football is still in the dark ages and needs to grow up.

That might be true in some instances, but it's not like we have just been getting steadily more and more left wing as time has gone on. The Victorian era really set liberalism back with its strict morals on social and sexual restraint, but of course the country could actually be considered more liberal before that time. Back then we were constantly swinging from left to right and back again, just like we do now. A couple of important events have permanently moved us towards the left, such as the Glorious Revolution and the separation of church and state, but other than that, not a whole lot has changed. There were liberal thinkers in ancient Greece who would be considered just as liberal nowadays. Even Anarchism can be traced back to the 6th Century BC.

I'm never shocked by homophobia, whether in football, in the pub or even on TV. Half the population of this country is probably homophobic. What surprises me though, is the things that these people associate with homosexuality. If I heard that Saints players were mocking Guardian readers and calling them gay, I don't think I could go on supporting the club. Not only is it an attack on gays, but a baffling attack on liberalism.
