Fantastic performance, very decent result. I was always confident of a Boro-type result and performance, and I/we got it. Thought everyone played well, but Cork and Lallana especially stood out. Cork had a Morgan-esque game, whilst Lallana was clearly back to his very best. Playing on the last man, Sharp offers us something completely different - if the likes of Cork continue to play those balls into him, I can see a fair few goals coming out way. That said, I thought Adkins was spot on to replace him to Connolly. The situation in the game was calling out for us to go back to our usual tippy-tappy way, and Connolly is a big part of that. No complaints today, except for maybe Connolly's goal being ruled out for offside. Impossible to tell from where I was sitting, but the way he celebrated suggested to me that he was onside. But it's hardly a complaint.
I don't like seeing posters worrying about other teams. It's all in our hands. If we fail to make second it would be our own fault, not another teams'.
Disagree. There's still 16 games left. Anyone down as far as Boro in 9th are still very much in the automatic race. Five points is nothing. Us long to West Ham, and Cardiff beating Posh, are both not unrealistic outcomes on Tuesday - and they'd obviously be just two between us if that did happen. If it only takes one or two results to change things, no matter what the scenario, then the side in question was never actually out of it.
Yes, but their performance determines our margin for error...I'd like to have as much as possible, because we're unlikely to take the remaining 48 points.
We didn't have much room for error in the last run-in, thanks to Huddersfield, but that pushed us on to a superb run that we know we are capable of even in this league.
I know there are still a lot of games, but this was important for the points (especially with some games cancelled making the table look good) but also for team confidence. Nigel kept saying we had a great team, but you can't keep losing and drawing without morale dropping. A great result.
Fantastic win and just what we needed! I think it was good to see Connolly contribute the way he did because it seems a lot of people have been slagging him off and wondering what he can do for the team. Well today he gave Burnley a problem when he came on! The stand-out player today was Lambert for me. His all round play was exceptional and his first touch is instant. He also made some great passes including the one to Billy for the goal. Onwards and upwards again! COYR
his assistant on the itchen side was appalling. Their CB flicked his elbow at Connolly approx 5 yards in front of him and he didn't see it.
I assume that was their right-sided CB? Their left-sided CB (no.15), who was attempting to mainly look after Lambert, was absoloutely rubbish. One of the worst performances from a CB that I've seen at SMS for a very long time.
Stayed in Southampton for a bit afterwards, so just got back. Very impressive team performance out there. Having Hooiveld back was key to never looking like conceeding throughout. Lambert's vision and control were first class and Sharp looks a serious goal threat. Connolly's goal didn't look offside, but I'll watch the replay. Luckily that didn't decide the game.
I'm in the Kingsland but from what I perceived, the Itchen lino was the weakest link! Was Conn offside? I was a long way away but I couldn't figure how he could have been off side when the ball was kicked.
Steve Claridge was very complimentary in his post match analysis of Saints v Burnley. Plus, he said one or two things I think a few Saints fans might like to take notice of. I'll leave it to those keen enough to watch TFLS on iPlayer when they get the chance.
