True Jose, they have backed up their own optimism and mine, Rosberg topped the time sheets today, although only three teams set a fast time it still shows that they have something special.

They was only reporting what they were seeing. Mercedes were slow, lacking downforce and had terrible reliability. It was there for all to see, even Schumacher was saying it.

The Autosport magazine just looks like the Sun, they don't know a thing about anything. I can't believe they are taking testing times into account, and overemphasis everything - oh wait, they are the Sun in disguise

Also, the picture in the bottom right, anyone remember that? I know it was at Brazil on the second straight, but anyone know what year it was??

How odd to begin a thread with an apology…

However, I am very pleased that you are happier now. Unfortunately I think your caveat about waiting for the reality of Australia is very well-founded.

What a waste of money that was. They predicted McLaren to win the constructors. They're obviously just telling the casual fans what they want to hear, people with a deeper interest in the sport would buy Autosport of the official F1 mag.

Could it not be that Mercedes were after a good showing following some of the press and comments? It is worth noting that the cars do not even need to be legal for testing, so the car may also have been well underweight.

Not suggesting that this was the case, but I am not sure that the latest upgrade would have brought as much time as this super lap from Schumi would indicate.

That's a daft thing to say. They could do what they wanted although if you see a car with a rocket, it is obvious what they are doing. If you have a car which is 100kg underweight, you can set a good time, and get people talking.

They may end up being very quick, however, it may be to divert attention, specifically the negative.

sorry what I was getting at (in a weird way) was if they want to test for F1 the car would be better off at F1 regulations. now if they wanted to try out different things they could run with KERS off, not use the ARW, higher or lower fuel loads. different worn tyres, the engine may be turned down. aerodynamic testing devises may be fitted to the car that add weight and create drag. but Ivery much doubt they would run a car lighter than the minimum regulations

That would depend. If you had a lot of people saying how much trouble you were in, including the drivers, then you put all your faith in a last minute upgrade, and it wasn't working as planned, a low weight run would be a good way to divert some attention.

I agree that the team will not learn anything by doing anything other than using a legal car, but that is not to say that there is nothing to gain from doing so, and all they would lose is a few minutes of track time.

Sauber did it last year to try and attract sponsors, and who knows what other teams have done.

I'm not suggesting anything, as it is difficult to know who had what to gain from what, not knowing sponsorship positions etc, not to mention the game of bluff and double bluff between teams, and the only time things all make sense is when they actually get racing.

I was merely pointing out that there could be many reasons for such a good time, and without knowing the circumstances behind it, it would be foolish to read too much into it.

If the race comes and they are fast, then that's the answer. If they are no better than last year, then again, you can assume they wasted a few minutes of testing.
