Re the Irish card on Sunday would it not have been sensible for horses like Long Run etc to be entered in Ireland as well as Newbury as a back-up plan if nothing else? Seems a bit foolhardy to assume the weather won't affect meetings this time of year...Do the trainers not know their allowed to run in Ireland too <laugh>

Can only imagine the hoo haa if, heaven fordbid, Sandown was called off next week though... Long Run, Zarkander and a fair few others apparently badly needing their runs before Cheltenham. I think I'd just have to ring ole Nicky boy up and say 'Aye Nicky boy if you'd a sent that big plodder Long Run over for the Hennessey along with Conan you'd a got your run into him and an easy Grade One prizepot into the bargain'...

Probably worried about the heavy ground? It's a bit tied up with the debate on the Friday DT - is it better to try and get the horse fit on the gallpos or run him in a jumpers bumper?

I would generally like to see more UK horses sent to Ireland for the big races though. I really admire the way Gordon Elliot likes to send his horses over for a crack at plenty of UK races <ok>

Aye it's usually a tip in itself when that rogue sends one over. He usually returns with more than he leaves with... Paul Nicholls has the right idea. Pretty much since the incomparable Beef or Salmon put on his pipe and slippers the Grade One Irish staying chases are winnable with a low 160s horse, as Paul has exploited to his advantage numerous times. Fair play to him. I know Nicky likes to send over a few good 'uns for Punchestown too mind.

Can someone help me out here .................. I noticed that Ruby Walsh was allowed to defer his suspension from today as there was a Grade 1 race at Newbury (or would have been without the weather). Does the BHA only allow a 1 day deferral (so for instance instead of Fri, Sat, Sun, it would have been Fri, Sun, Mon) or can the deferral be for several days? The reason I ask is, if a jockey receives a 5 day ban commencing 12th March, can he serve day 1 on the 12th and then defer the other 4 days until after the festival (as there is a Grade 1 race on each day of the festival)? I only ask because during the whip debate there was the suspicion that jockeys would take a week off prior to Cheltenham to avoid being banned, but if they can defer any ban to days without a Grade 1 race, then the situation wouldn't occur would it?

2.05 Cadore - Ran well on hurdles debut, but wasn't great last time out. Yard are in good form and I expect an improved performance. EW bet

2.35 Devotion To Duty - Same yard as Cadore, on penultimate start he ran a really well and has good form in the book. Weight has dropped due to dreadful run last time. EW bet

2.45 Five Star Junior - My best bet, another who is dropping down the weights and I think this race is framed perfectly for him. He can win from this mark and he is drawn well to run a big race. EW bet

3.20 Captain Scooby - another who hasn't got the best form on the book. He however is better than his last run (dreadful ride) and he is overpriced today. EW bet
