I was at every home game that season. I'll still never forget the Wednesday night we beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 to clinch the title. The place was heaving more than 65,000 in the ground!
In the late 60s, 70s and early 80s my cousins lived about 3 streets away from the Spurs pitch. In a terreced house that has now been demolish and redevelop. When visiting them (as we did quite often),I could hear every goal being cheered or jeered from the house. I had already began to play a lot of football and had varying degrees of interest in most of the London clubs, when one day my wheeler/dealer uncle got tickets for a League Cup game. That game was Spurs v Bristol City., During the game I ditched all interests in other clubs football and cemented my links with Spurs. That was about 35 years ago. I've never looked back.
Thought I'd use this thread to join the forum, long time reader (lurker). Used to post on the old 606 under the same tag. Summer 1978, I was your average 6 year old snot nose playing footie on the road. One day, my Dad (Leeds supporter)comes walking up the road, coming home from work balancing a large cardboard box on his honda 50. It was our 1st colour TV. He sets it up that evening and we settle down to watch the start of the World Cup in Argentina. As the tournament progressed, I was drawn to the Argentine football team. Loved their style of football, compared to the kick and rush style we played in the park. Then when Ardiles and Villa signed for Spurs, that sold me. Been loving the rollercoaster ride since then.
I guess you moved in different circles. Whilst you were going around checking the spelling on street signs, Spurf was running a local prediction league racket
I had an uncle who was a die-hard Spurs fan despite having worked at Woolwich Arsenal (war-time) before they moved to the Enfield Lock site...... My first trip to WHL at the age of 9 was a game against Stoke 23/03/68 - a 3-0 home win - and was hooked for life...... Went to school in Streatham and also went to see Palace occasionally from 68-74. Then moved to North London in the mid 80's and was a regular at Barnet during the Barry Fry days - promotion to the League for the first time etc.
Neither of my parents are really into sport, but my Uncle is a big Tottenham fan so he got me into Spurs. Ironically enough I grew up about 10 minutes from the Chelsea training ground so they would be the nearest team that I would have links to geographically. Saw Fat Frank in my opticians last year actually. But yeah, my uncle has had me hooked since I was about 10, I didn't ever get to go to many games though because I could never afford it. Now I live in Newcastle so I get to the Newcastle and Sunderland away games and the odd pre-season friendly, which is better than nothing I suppose.
The first time I saw football on TV was the 1961 (or 1962) cup final and I picked a team to support at random. I know I've been a Spurs fan ever since then. I could have chosen Leicester City!
Another long time reader but 1st time poster! As a kid I had no interest in football until my dad took me to the lane, 74/75, to see us beat Luton 2-1. I must of enjoyed it as I've been going ever since!! Had my season ticket for 14 seasons now, never give it up!! FOGS
