I think times have changed though Cutey with the money they earn now. Its only natural, the more you earn, the more is expected in terms of performance and loyalty. Believe me none of the current generation will be needing to sell off their medals to make a few quid unless they have a serious gambling addiction or some other addiction burning a hole. They're set by 21.

The problem with modern players is the they want the money from the clubs and expect their market value, but the contract they sign is not worth the paper its written on. If they want out 6 months later because they can get more money again, they can't see the problem. Its generally accepted now you can't keep an unhappy player. It was better when the clubs and managers had the power and just turned round and said you're not going anywhere. And if they kicked upa fuss, they were told to **** off and train with the kids until they agreed the amanger was right afterall. My question would be what is the club getting for its outlay? A promise to play until a better offer comes along it seems.

I agree to an extent, and for all of the pre-Premier League era players, the financial side of it was ridiculously tight. But as for current players, I'd say there's 2 things to consider:

    1) I don't expect undying loyalty from every single player that comes to the Toon (Sunderland for yourselves) nor would I want it. Football is an entertainment business and where a few hundred years ago people would go to the theatre and throw fruit at the villains, now we go to our stadiums and hurl abuse at our own! It hurts and you feel betrayed, but there's also something brilliant about being dug in with 50000 others screaming at the top of your lungs at the 'one greedy bastard' playing in opposition colours. So whilst I understand hating someone for doing something most of us would do anyway (how many of you would give a **** about leaving blackburn if fulham offered more money?) is illogical, but its good ****ing fun!

    2) Players have a short career, that's true. But when they retire, many will have earned millions (some even millions each year) so why the **** should we feel sorry for them? There's loads of international rugby players who've simultaneously done degrees (a few who are qualified Doctors etc.) so why is it that a footballer can't continue on in their own education? And let's say perhaps they're not suited to academia, that's fine, they could start their own business, at the end of the day, they have a MASSIVE headstart on most others small business owners who have to remortgage themselves silly just to get close to opening, leaving their profit margins so tight it hurts - a footballer with his own capital doesn't face that issue. I personally think a lot of them who find themselves in financial ruin and claim that it was the shortness of their career that left them that way are ****ing idiots and have very little of my sympathy

[EDIT] just to reiterate, I'm talking about modern/post-premier league tv deal footballers.

Dont think this is racist...Ive heard discussions about the foreign players bringing quality to the Premiership for example.... or even diving too The fact is we once had a pro league where proportionally we didnt have as many "Foreign" players surely is non specific...I was about to write I think Charlie Hurley could have stuck around longer....!

Jesus Was A Geordie - some good points there. I do accept that the Prem has made things a lot better for players and they should be looking after themselves better, rather than p**sing it against the wall. Also, if you boo an ex-player for fun, I don't see anything particularly objectionable about it (good analogy with medieval theatres, and kids still hiss and boo the villain at pantomimes). But some of the comments on here aren't like that, e.g. I hope Bent breaks his leg. I don't go with that. The only player I've ever wished that on was Billy Bremner who deliberately and knowingly broke not a few opposition legs in his time.

At the end of the day though, we live in a capitalist society, and I can't really hate any lad for bettering himself financially.

Players have as much loyalty to clubs and the fans as the fans and the clubs have towards the players: usually **** all, though there are exceptions. Fans will scream for a player to be canned if he starts playing badly. They'll sell the most loyal player in the squad without a second thought if a better player becomes available. For some reason, though, they expect players to be loyal to a bunch of people who will turn on them the minute their form drops. Completely illogical

Without doubt the loyalty runs both ways. Certainly from the point of view of fans turning on players. But we're paying for the privilege to watch them, they are making millions from the game so the loyalty has been bought. The fans are the reason the game generates the money to pay these silly wages. No fans, no product. Essentially the fans are like shareholders without any hope of return.

So whilst I agree it runs both ways, the money must ease the burden on the players!

    Racist my arse!

Our game is overloaded with foreign money grabbing twats, nothing to do with race.
Most of them are honest enough to admit that is why they are here.
Bloody hell they even have the nerve to say they sign for lower down teams to put themselves in the shop window for a big money move.
The money grabbers far out weigh the ones who play for the love of the game.
Sess came here and took a pay cut, did he do it to put himself in the window? No idea, what I do know, I hope he lasts as long as Solano did.

A thread pointing out the good guys like Solano aren't being put in the same bracket as the greedy ones.

Commachio is married to a Thai lass, and has a beautiful half-Thai daughter.

To accuse him of being racist is ****ing ridiculous, frankly.

If the title had have been 'why not all English footballers are adultering, money grabbing, arrogant twats' (an untrue statement of course, before I get nailed), would anything have been said?

    Ridiculous.

On the subject matter, I think it's smashing to see Solano doing what he is, the benefit to the club will be immense.

Nobby always liked the Geordie lasses mind, maybe it's tougher to get 5-in-a-bed elsewhere.... <whistle> (another disclaimer, to keep the peace, there are other places in the world where getting some good lady loving is just as easy as the Toon, such as Prague, Amsterdam...)

Don't know about you, but the reason I show up for work is pure money grubbing greed. I will happily work for the person who pays me the most. I would take a job with a view to securing a move to a subsequnet employer that would pay me even more.

Many times in my career I have not loved my employer or the persons who my employment ultimately benefitted. Sometimes I thought they were right twats.

Up until now, I had thought that the vast majority of employees were more or less like me. From this thread, though, it appears that taking a job simply to earn money is a bad thing.

You mean you wouldn't go to work for no pay just to benefit society and line the pockets of your companies shareholders.

    You bastard you.

I was offered a highly paid job at Pinewood studios many moons ago.
Practically twice what I was earning at home.
I didn't go as I preferred to stay with my family and friends and SAFC. And the money I was earning was pretty good anyway.

Must be nice for employers to spend money training staff, then have them jump ship as soon as they are trained.
I know it's human nature doesn't mean I have to like it!

The Canadians aren't a race. We're even more multi-ethnic than England - - certainly than Newcastle

As I said above, you get the loyalty you give. I've had soem bvery decent employers. None of them have had cause to complain about lackof reciprocation on my part. I've also had employers who frankly regarded me as a commodity. For them I fulfilled my contractual obligations.

Employers don't offer you a job till death do you part - - only until it is financially unsound for them to do so. The commitment from employees is no greateer

I was guard of honor at the 200 year bicenteniall opening of your houses of parliament, and the guard of honor for the celebrations of the Ridueu canal, by the St Lawrence seaway, loved my time there always remember Lake Gatnaue, sorry about the name spelling of the places if wrong.
