I just replied to a thread but thought this was interesting enough for an article, although its for us old farts only i think. Do you remember where you were or what you were doing in 73, i do its vivid in my mind, i was having a bit of hanky panky with my missus being newly weds, I was in married quarters at the time, attached to 36 engr regt Maidstone from 9 para, the build up had been on the telly all day, seem to remember the boat race or grand national around the same day, anyway i was at it like every 4 hours like a kid with a new toy, Not even close to the vinegar strokes i heard the match start, realised the importance in the order of things, and finished so fast it was like id ran an assault course in 60 secs, to get in front of the telly. i had traccy bottom on we scored Porterfield i ran outside, the neighbours all new me, and were supporting the lads, 2 guys had come running out of their houses at the same time, we hugged and did a jig for a few mins, i could hear some thing happening on the box, and ran back inside, there was constant knocking on the door but i didn't move i ended up with around 30 couples crammed in watching, When Monty's save came along there was more noise than Sid James after a win. Ended up with a barbie, lucky enough i bought loads of stocks for the big occasion and the garden was massive, a cracking time was had by all, ahhh well those were the days my friend. I f your reading this Roy enjoy the memories
Roger mate, you may have missed this one. http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/31730-Where-were-you-in-glorios-1973 allthe best from Papendrecht.
Never mind, Roger. I will do my bit on the other thread that Bill pointed out. Missed it when it first came around because I was pissed off at BC and how his views were being accommodated on here back then. So I dropped off for a month or so. Nothing lasts forever. Thank yee!
I was watching at a mate's house as he was the only one with a colour TV,when we score I jumped up and broke his brand new settee.I was embarassed as hell and offered to pay for a new settee-his reply -don't even think about it as it would spoil a great day for all mackems. Although we live 300 miles apart we still meet up regularly and our friendship will be forever.I'd still love to celebrate when his Dunfermline boys achieve something as good as 1973 was for us Mackems.
Roger although just a boy then I'm proud to say i was at Wembley on the great day with my Dad and my older brother. Me and my Dad were also at Hillsborough for the semi versus Arsenal and at Maine Road versus Man City also great days obviously. We saw all the home legs too in '73 I dont think too many on here could match that record for the 73 run, but for me having already become a regular at Roker Park by then there was no turning back for me after that! Great memories indeed!!!
I had just returned from working in South Africa and I never forget my dad saying that we had a good team and that we would surprise someone one day - and didn't we ? I was working in Rotherham at the time and saw the semi final against Arsenal - I still remember floating from the ground not believing what I had seen. My grans funeral was on the friday before the match and all the family was in the area - could we be sad, no chance. I'll never forget the feeling when Monty made the save, it was in, it was, honest - then it wasn't, unbelievable. I had a open top sports car at the time and my cousins and I drove through the town afterwards, no one on the streets, but cars driving thro blowing their horns. A great day. I came back up to see the lads return and the massive turn out - I drove up from Rotherham and there were people standing by the road side right thro from Chester le Street. Even better there were a few leeds supporters in my work so it was very satisfying returning after the match.
Woody as i recall the victory parade didn't actually go through Chester-le-Street. It followed the A690 from Durham to Sunderland, I waved the lads by at East Rainton. It was nevertheless a phenominal turn out as i recall.
Thanks for your memories boys, a very nice read, all contributions are welcome, hoping we have some more
I was 9 at the time and watching in my mates house on his brand fire new colour telly one of the first on TEF I reckon. His big sister went to make a cuppa just as Porterfield scored came running back in nearly took the door off it's hinges.
I was at Wembley and was sick over a wall at the end. Jumped up when Porterfield shot so I blocked a lot of people's view of the goal. A couple weeks later I holidayed in London and went back to Wembley. It was strange without the crowds
I was 1 at the time, so probably wasnt doing a lot, but my Dad was there with his huge Sunderland top hat on. (still have a picture somewhere of that)
I was at Wembley that day and had two reasons to celebrate. Every season I always put ã1 each way on the lads in the cup. That year Sunderland were near the bottom of the, then, 2nd Division so I put my bet on at the odds of 250/1. Quite a lot of money in those days. After that I made the decision to stop while I was ahead and not bet on the F A Cup again.
My family all went to the odeon to watch it. I chose to stay at home....and watch it on the black n white telly!
I was at every game in the 73 cup run, got the sack for going to Reading away. I was 23 at the time, in the semi & final my Dad also went, at full time in the semi I saw my Dad cry for the only time. He wasn,t the only grown man with tears streaming down there faces either. Dockers, shipbuilder, miners, strong men crying with joy. I hope to see it again in my lifetime, but if not among all the suffering of 50 years loyal support, on one can take those memories away from me. For you who are not so old KTF your time will come.
Research is better Roger, my thread, but you should have closed it down never mind, sure it will all work out.
I was there!!!!1 Great day out on the supporters association buses there and back remember going to have our photos taken out side 10 Downing Street (for those younger ones that meant at the actual door with the policeman in shot, not locked out side those gates at the end of the street). My mates dad insisted that we go and pray at the Abbey before going to the ground, god obviously was listening that day. One thing I do remember was how every body in London wanted us to beat Leeds. At one point two Chlesea fans stoppied their car jumped out and gave, free of charge , two tickets to sunderland fans just because they hated Leeds so much. I was 15 anfd just hope that the day will come soon when we go back there and win again. In my bones I dont think it will be to long to wait. No more than 3 years.
