The World is not coming to an end, earth quakes, Tsunamis, extreme weather events etc are normal parts of the Earth's life cycle, it's not like they have just started happening recently they have been going on for hundreds of millions of years. The 2012 stuff is a load of nonsense.

There was a theory that the Supermoon could pull more strongly on the Earths crust setting off earthquakes, probably a load of nonsense though.

The moon does have a gravitational effect on the tides, you would think if it was a "Supermoon" capable of causing earthquakes then it would have a correspondingly bigger effect on the tides causing massive flooding in some coastal areas. Tectonic activity is the usual cause of earthquakes as the plates move and grind against each other, our history of occupation of the planet in geological timeline terms is an eyeblink and probably coincides with a relatively low period of activity. Japan has a long history of earthquakes and they build with that in mind however this was a big one, I am not a religious person but will say a prayer for the dead, also humour is sometimes a release in the face of tragedy but with the threat of serious nuclear contamination and the widespread death and destruction that has happened not for now.

Exactly why this talk of the end of the World is complete nonsense. People are more aware of World wide events because of advances in technology and communications. Just because people weren't aware of such events in the past doesn't mean that they weren't happening!

As you say the World has been around for a lot longer than humans and these sort of events have been going on for hundreds of millions of years. Some people just get all giddy and overeacted every time something happens.

The reactor has now exploded, things are not looking good. I'd like to know if anyone knows if the 606 member on the Newcastle forum who was working in Japan is ok? Unfortunately I've forgotten his user name.

A lot of people have been evacuated so don't have internet access. To be honest, I doubt not606 will be the first thing on people's minds at the moment, we'll just have to wait and cross our fingers.
