Was great today, Two world class saves to save us a point.. i guess the media will overlook that and try and look for a mistake rather then praising him De Gea we salute you
Trouble is that it's a bit Gomes-like. Great shot stopping, but still a mistake in him when he's outside his comfort zone.
This is the save for anyone who wants to see it again.
I'm beginning to think that de Gea's athleticism to make the spectacular saves, may require him to have a lighter frame than is common for goalkeepers. In other words, bulk up, but not too much. Find a way of developing a commanding presence that doesn't require too much physical muscle.
Well he is really lanky now, think a young Ronaldo when he first joined. It's not so much of bulking him up as it is filling him out. His best attribute is his reflexes and natural instincts, those can't be taught. As he feels stronger I hope he'll overcome the mental block he has when it comes to crosses. I think he has the perception of the English game he got from Spain that it's all just big strong guys throwing themselves at high crosses, and he's afraid to come out and get beaten as he'd rather rely on his strengths. He also needs to command the defense better, but Schmeical demanded respect from his teamates and Van Der Saar earned it. Once De Gea figures out how to become his own persona in goal rather than "just" a 'keeper, I think he will then become world class. Just my thoughts anyway.
I was quite amazed at how high he gets off the ground as well. If you look at Mata's goal, De Gea must be around 5 feet in the air which I'm struggling to see any other keeper do, certainly in this league. So I reckon this could be a way of improving his technique at crosses, just out jumping everyone. It's not a problem with his hands either because when he has the more orthodox technique of catching the ball with the palms facing outwards, it's superb technique. I don't think its a confidence thing either, if you read his interviews that he's given he seems to be a confident guy. He has tried to come out at corners (and let's be honest, the defence has never helped, if you look at the goals we conceded against Stoke, Livepool and Blackburn from corners the defence has been absent, dare I say wouldn't have happened with Vidic in the team? Maybe, maybe not. But it's a bit like after the Stoke game. He had a fabulous game, made two world class saves, on their own worthy of save of the season. And all the build up had been how he would cope against their aerial threat. It was almost a similar thing yesterday but the way some people go on about him, especially that numpty Phil McNulty on the Beeb it's just amazing how much the media have nit picked everything so badly. I remember a time in 2006 when we had really bad trouble from set pieces and this was with VDS, Rio and Vidic and we looked like conceding all the time, I think Obefami Martins (whos about 4 foot tall) scored a header against us that typified that problem. It's one thing saying the keeper needs to be commanding, but it does help if defenders take charge as well.
Great save and somewhere I heard someone complain why he used his right hand instead of his left hand. On the respect of the teammates issue, seeing how the guys were hugging him, it can only boost his confidence and help him settle down. Once the defence is consistently the same shape, it will help him command his area better.
A steady front 4 would help De Gea settle in, but he still needs robbed able to command anyone playing defense. Im sure if Vidic was the one constant in the back four he'd have a lot more help keeping everyone organized.
He's a good shot stopper but he can't catch a ball so therefore he is a shocking goalkeeper at the moment but he is young and has time to improve.
his only problem is that he is a right soft ****. He needs to ****ing grow up and claim his penalty area......man up time, has more than enough ability
