The last time I saw that much padding I was at a Silent Night home store looking for a new mattress. The pansies, padded man grappling another padded man, & they all celebrate like something skillful happened! I don't get it, what is going on & why do 200million people eat crisps & watch it? Anyone know?
I read somewhere that your average game will have about 15 minutes of action. And they go on for hours! When will they just accept that the rest of the world has got it right?
I reckon Anthony Pulis could have made it in American Football, seriously. Why is it called football, do they actually kick it...........ever? Been watching for a while now, I still don't get it!
Yeah, I'm watching it a bit. Always been slightly interested, since Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins. Basically, it's Chess with muscles and sweat.
No, the game has an hour of action, in 4 periods of 15 minutes, because they stop the clock at the end of each play. Nearly 4 hours is the usual time taken though
Although I know I'll never get into it anything like I did back in the 1980's, I would recommend it as a viewing spectacle, if you like statistics and tactics. As PM says, it is very, very tactical. Because of the frequent breaks, Mark Chapman and Co earn their wage a lot more than Lineker and Co. I always feel American Football suits American audiences, because it is about short sharp moments of action for people with short attention spans.
i'd really like to enjoy this game, but the stop start, ok lets change teams and then more stop start really does my head in. 11 MEN stay on the pitch and play the bloody game. This must be (apart from sumo, who are highly trained and very fit) the only sport where a 400lb lardarse can be called an athlete
As a self confessed US sports nut from having lived over there, I have to agree very tactical. I find NHL and College Football better action than NFL in general but there is no denying that the Superbowl is a spectacle than any other country just won't get close to! Nothing gets close to the crowd atmosphere in football though..... and yes I mean proper football of the kicking kind
It's a brilliant sport though, I thought it was terrible until I actually bothered to learn to understand it and I know several people who feel the same.
Just noticed the first post of the thread makes fun of the padding (because it's completely unmanly to have slight protection when a 19 stone man sprints into you). How long until the first "rugby for ****s" comment?
Believe it started like rugby, but people said it was too dangerous hence the padding. However, with padding there's a lot more banging into each other, so not too sure that works. I know it's tactical but really can't be bothered. All that stop start is exactly why I don't want technology in (proper) football.
Well they need that time for the adverts. If it brought in extra money I am sure the Premier League teams would do the same!
They need all the razzmatazz and fireworks to make it look interesting. Their sport is like their movies - big action blockbusters to keep the US public captivated. I couldn't imagine them settling down to watch an Almodovar film...
