My thoughts go out to the people in Japan but is anyone worried about this coming out about the nuclear reactors. Apparently the pressure keeps building and some are predicting a possible meltdown.

"2153The pressure inside one of the six Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs) at the Fukushima-Daiichi plant has built up because the cooling system was damaged by the earthquake. The heat produced by the nuclear reaction inside the core still needs to be dissipated even after a shutdown. If the outage in the cooling system persists, eventually radiation could leak out into the environment, and, in the worst case, could cause a reactor meltdown, experts say."

Listening to BBC News it sounds like they can release some of the pressure without causing any health or enviromental risks, while they wait for the coolant. But I've also heard the coolent might not even work. A very worrying situation, not only for Japan, but also for it's neighbouring countries.

What do you mean by worried? I'm concerned for the people out there, but it's on the other side, it won't affect us personally.

Yeah, but Chernobyl's considerably closer to us than Japan. Don't think it would affect the UK too much, but still obviously wouldn't want a repeat of that.

This may sound really stupid but what would happen if there was to be a meltdown?

It's quite bad as I did Geography last year and studied Chernobyl... all I know is nothing good can come out of this. Read the whole report and it is getting a lot worse...

:\ Not sure on what would happen, guessing a load of illnesses in surrounding areas, deformities in kids, dying plants in the area and no wildlife within certain radius? Remember doing something on it in either Geography or Physics.

There was nothing serious either, like people dying or growing deformities.

We'd be more affected by economical impacts. It would be a disaster for Japan, obviously the explosion would be devastating to people in close proximity, and there'd be mass evacuations in towns and cities surrounding it to avoid the fall out. There are still ghost towns in Ukraine where everyone had to evacuate at short notice following the Chernobyl disaster.
