Have just read a similar article, Sky Sports version like.

I think he's just said that he's looking for a worthy striker, not necessarily someone for the no. 9 shirt straight away (well i'd hope not)

What's everyones views on the shirt? Would we rather someone like Besty get it in a few years (if good enough) or someone new to come in and claim it?

We had them both and let slip through our fingers.

Saha not bothered about, he's injury prone but Rossi would have been great.

we should get Honda from CSKA, then once everyone from Japan starts supporting Newcastle because of it a newspaper can run the innapropriate headline:

    "T(s)oonarmy hits Japan"

  7. We should be hunting a new striker, but not a new number 9. We can never be sure if we have a loyal player in the number 9 shirt, however, our best hope is wait until the player has been here for a while, and think about our circumstances.

Will the player jump at the first opportunity to get into the CL? Higher wages?

Lets be patient before handing out the number 9, rather than half a decent season in the championship.

Wouldn't give any current players the number 9 yet, otherwise it risks becoming a joke, especially after Martins got it (wrongly IMO - yes he was good, but you can't compare him to previous wearers). Maybe I'm reading too far into it.

I wouldnt give it to anyone until they have proved they are a good enough goalscorer (and person) to wear it.

I don't want a number 9 next season. Need someone to prove themselves.

I think Pardew is sending out a signal to our current crop of strikers to try and get them on form and scoring plenty.

If we dont win at Stoke, i can see us beginning to panic and being dependant on the teams below us to cock up. Recently they have been picking up there form, i'm looking below our team to see how other are getting on as oppose to teams around.

A new striker is a must.

We can sign a good striker without having to give them the number 9 shirt

This. Don't want another number 9 until they've proven themselves
