I was a bit upset when Ayr United beat Newcastle in the Champions League final and I expressed that to the awaiting press but as manager of Ayr United I also felt proud.

I then resigned and became manager of NUFC.

I used to be like you lot and cheat, but quickly got bored after a while.
I did this challenge with a custom database last year where you fast forward a season and take on a newly promoted team to the conference north/south, without cheating and I managed to get Truro from minnows battling against relegation in the Conference South up to the Championship and the new one came out so gave up on it, but it had me hooked!
Now I play exclusively as a Lower League Manager and never cheat, don't replay matches, don't use other people's tactics or training methods and don't look for decent players that people have shared! Also not allowed to use the player searches, you can only use your scouts as if you were a real manager & start out with no managerial experience.

I'm now currently in the 3rd season with Dover after winning 2 back to back leagues (ran away with the Conference South, but the Conference went down to the last game of the season, it was that tight I could have finished anywhere between 1st-10th!) & a FA Trophy (final was against Gateshead)! I'm probably going to get relegated this season or battle for survival as we've only just turned professional & don't have the money to compete with some of the League 2 big boys!

Most the players I've signed were free, I just scouted for players newly released from some of the top clubs and signed most players on 1 year contracts in my first season, so once promoted I could weed out the ones not good enough for the club and give extensions to the ones that would help me rise up the Conference!
It probably comes across as weird, but since playing like this I've had much more enjoyment than managing a big club, plus I can still manage Newcastle if the chance arises once I've built up and earned the experience to manage at the top table!

This generally works for me. First red in a season = warning, second red= weeks wages, third red and over = 2 weeks wages. This generally stops the players complaining. However if players keep getting sent off, retrain them to stay on feet when tackling.

On FM10 with Newcastle all I had to do was draw with bottom of the league Wolves on the last day of the season to clinch 4th place. Wolves scored a winner in the last few seconds of the game which led to me rather angrily puching my laptop which ended up absolutely obliterating the screen! Ended up having to fork out £500 for a new laptop.

I've just played West Ham (A), Chelsea (H), Man U (A) and Arsenal (H) in my first 4 games as Spuds manager, managed to get 8 points but scored 14 and conceded 12! Think it may be my attacking formation:

    Gomes
    King - Gallas
    Sandro - Huddlestone - Fellaini
    Lennon - VDV - Modric - Bale
    Dzeko

P.S. Be careful not to rip the head off it Tash.

I tried this a couple of years back, when Peterborough were in league 2, it was a pain in the ass because my team were too good for league 2, but the step up to league 1 was a big one and I was always battling with relegation, then got sacked. The feckers.

I only sign players through scouting too, other recommendations from people dont usually work as different players reach different potentials on each game! For Newcastle I had two computer made players come through my youths and broke them into the first team, its quite a proud moment when they make the step up!

See I'm running quite a lot of leagues, so if I get sacked - probably got a high chance of joining a team somewhere, even if it's at the bottom rung again - although I'm classed as a talent young manager and a few league 1 clubs are sniffing around already!
I'd be tempted to join them, but with a heavy heart as I've become a legend at Dover - however if the wages they offer are really high, it'd be too good to turn down and I'm trying to play as realistic as possible!

I usually do a fair few different countries so I dont get to bored. On an older save I went from the Championship to the Hyundai A League in Australia, took over the team bottom with 3 games remaining in the season, won the league the next year! Was quite proud of that achievement.

I'm much too much of a bastard to be able to stay with a club too long, longest I've stayed at any club is 6 seasons (nufc & athletico madrid)

I had a game on Football Manager 2009, where I took over Gillingham got them promoted the first year, finished 15th without spending any money, then was told I was expected to get in the play-offs which I did finishing 5th, was 7th in November was in threat of losing my job and had no chance of getting a better one.

See another feature this year that's awesome is the reputation of leagues, so if you take over a club in a crap league you can increase the reputation of it by winning things!

How dare you even ask that question :) Football manager all day long! They put far more research in finding talents and hot prospects whilst only the obvious players are made good on fifa manager.
