The point is that the overall number of goals for the team is on par with Chelsea and Mancheser United. So it is the distribution of the goals that is the issue, not the overall number. Do you want to discuss the overall number of goals or who is scoring them? Or do you want to discuss your hypothisis that if the midfielders scored more goals, Van Persie's would still have scored as many. You have made that assuption, but if at the moment the midfielders are working to create space and set up chances for RVP and not each other, if they suddenly started trying to get into the box themselves instead, there is a very good chance that RVPs total would not be as high. Your plan to get the midfielders scoring more might result in a lower overall number of goals for the team. You were correct in identifying the problem, "I can't understand...".
What some people do not understand is Wenger's system is suppose to be dynamic and not static with a one up front central striker. The front three are suppose to combine and act as one strike force, sharing the goals. The problem at the moment is to do this you need to be technical good with very good ball control and striking ability. While Gervinho has technical ability to play this way, Walcott simply does not possess the skill to do it effectivily. Im not slating Walcott as i like him and he has attibutes to do well in a different type of formation, he simply does not fit this kind of system properly. Thankfully we have OXO coming through that will serve this system well. Walcott should be used in a counter-attack/central striking role.
I understand your argument. But I don't think it is poor logic, to think that the priorities for the midfield at present are: 1. Making goals for RVP 2. Supporting inexperienced full backs 3. Scoring Whereas normally it is: 1=. Making goals for RVP 1=. Scoring 3. Tracking back Perhaps?
It would be nice if Gervs and Theo would score more but I think assists are almost as good as goals anyway, especially when it the 'lay it on a silver plate' kind of assist it doesn't matter who taps it in. However, I would like to see our wingers and midfielders (especially Ramsey) make openings and score for themselves a bit more, it really takes the pressure of when one of your attacking midfielders creates a goal out of nothing.
I don't care who scores as long as it goes in. What I see as Arsenal issues at the moment on this front are: Insufficient personnel in the box when attacks are happening - if you ain't in the mix, you ain't gona score...leading to... Insufficient shooting from the Wingers & Midfielders - you won't score if you don't try...but also... Insufficient shooting from distance when a gap appears - not just wayward smashes, but knocking the ball away from the defender and trying to bend one in the corner.
ToledoTrumpton - are you for real ? Thanks for highlighting the fact that you don't get the 4-3-3 formation. Alexis Sanchez plays in the middles of the front 3, yet he has scored LESS goals than Fabregas .. who plays on the left of the 3. I feel it prudent to remind you that Fabregas is often in midfield too. You and Topgun, to a greater extent, have simplified a role you simply don't get. As Lazarus points out, the positions are interchangeable and you can hardly say RVP is the furthest forward of the 3 because most of the time he isn't. I still haven't seen an explanation as to why Messi has scored far more goals than Sanchez, considering he isn't as far forward or central as Sanchez most of the time. Maybe it's because Messi is a much better player .. much like RVP being a much better player than Walcott and Gervinho ..... I understand it perfectly therefore. Next time you try to make someone look silly, know what you are talking about first otherwise you look like ..... a muppet
I don't disagree with that. I was only pointing out that it was a matter of opinion (and not a certainty) that the midfielders could score more goals, without reducing the number of goals scored by RVP.
Jayram .. it's bizarre. Its not like we haven't all seen Walcott and Gervinho have glaring misses all season. I'd like to see how they would distribute the goals when those 2 at least can't score for jack !
Practice makes perfect and I'm never going to tell you that players can't get better. One of the most commonly requested skills for a professional coach coming in to teach a session, is "Finishing". The trouble is that very often the final shot is dependent on balance, fitness, a good first touch (control), composure, confidence and the decision to shoot in the first place. Very often it isn't the actual shooting ability of the players that is at fault. The fact that it is all of them who are failing to score, leads me to believe that there is a more fundemental issue here. In any case, when we get our full backs back, I think you will see our midfelders pick up their scoring a bit because they will have more chance to cut in and more space and time to shoot.
Toledo - Nah !! There is a reason why some players are better than others at shooting, there is a reason why some are more consistent. Its simply down to technique. A player with good technique will have his balance sorted, he will strike the ball the right way to make it go where he wants it to go. If you have good technique you will hit the target more often than not, you will rarely snatch at the ball, your knee will go over the ball. It is all bout technique, nothing more, nothing less. there is a reason why certain players can play 60/70 yard cross field balls with pin point accuracy and many others cannot. Good technique allows you to adjust when off balance or under pressure. Its all down to technique, nothing more.
A very high percentage of goals are scored from scuffs, deflections, toe-pokes, side-foots and generally improvised attempts. Again, I'm not going to tell you that good technique isn't a factor, but these are all professional players many with a lot of training and experience, with professional coaches. The reason they are not shooting well is not going to be entirely down to technique.
So lo and behold, I made a thread talking about how we are struggling for goals, and then just to prove my point, we go to Bolton and struggle to score dropping more points. Where are you Wenger Brigade? How amusing the Wenger brigade even came on this thread trying to argue we don't actually have a problem, once again showing what clowns they are, and more proof that they have no idea about what their talking about.
