Money has destroyed the game we all love. Nobody can get anywhere now, there are 6 teams in England, thats it. Are we ever going to return to what we once were? Unless you have money you can't challenge. Gone are the days where the F.A cup was actually seen as a great competition, as teams took it as serious/more serious than the league. Gone are the days that clubs got promoted, finished fourth and went on to win the league. (See 1989-1992) Gone are the days that alot of clubs regularly had 50,000+ buzzing on the terraces. Electric atmospheres. Gone are the days of loyalty, show someone the money and they will walk. Even if someone such as Leeds did get promoted, then what? We won't challenge as it is impossible. Can't afford top players. Can't afford top wages. Any good young players are taken from you. The sad thing for me is that I never experienced what I've been told was footballs peak. So a question for you on this tragic night... Will football ever return to what it was? Or has it already died...
You're right, money has ruined the game. But am i the only one who would hate for Leeds to become one of these elite premier league teams like Scum or City? There is no honesty or hard work involved in becoming a top prem side, you just buy it. I'd rather be a team like Stoke or Everton to be honest and still have some credibility as a club.
Agreed, I'd like us to be a team full of young talent who play attacking football, if this means we are a mid table EPL team, then that's fine for me, as long as we develop good players and bring the club back to the community.
I'd settle for being anything except what we are now. We are suffering a painful death and are as far from premiership football as we have ever been in last eight years. Just take a look at our two cup performances this season. Annihilated at Elland road by a reserve team in carling cup and hardly mustered a shot on goals. A brave performance against arsenal but once again hardly a shot on goal and in truth classes apart
But we have a beautiful 7 million pound refurbishment of the east stand. **** off Ken you old clueless dimwit.
Yes the game has changed but is it really as bad as that?? Swansea and Norwich have spent comparatively little and they're doing well in the Prem. How much did Grant Holt cost? Or Scott Sinclair or Nathan Dyer? Swansea very very nearly beat a Chelsea team that contained £50million Torres, £24million Luiz and £24million Mata. Surely if money rules all Chelsea should have won that game 10-0 no? Man City lost tonight to a team whose combined salaries probably cover one or two of their players. Even in our league Leicester, one of the biggest spenders, are be mid-table. A couple of years ago people said Chelsea were going to win the league the next 50 years in a row. Don't think that’s happened. I know it's massively un-cool to say things like this but isn't it good to have some of the worlds best players in England? Yes there are many negatives to the game today, but the same could be said of football 20-30 years ago too, they were just different negatives.
Rangers put in a £500,000 bid for Grant Holt tonight, not surprisingly it was turned down by Norwich. I know he's not exactly what we need, but I'd would have been chuffed if we had got a player like Holt, at least it would get me off my seat if watching Leeds.
Bognor Rock, Welcome to the board buddy Personally, I think the reason we havn't been making good signings is because of Grayson has no pull. Look at West Ham, they make these signings because they have Sam Allardyce and he has the pull to get them in. Again Bates has actually said that we had 2m to spend this window before the sale of Howson and we have spent 500k on Pugh
People will claim that Becchio is as good as Holt. He is no where near the class regardless of any stats that people can throw at me
I think it boils down to this... We follow football and attend matches to be entertained, at Leeds United, we just end up pissed off.
The thing is, when Leeds return to the prem either this season or in the next few, your foundations in terms of fan base and ability to make money and the players you can bring through your youth team will make you competitive. The key is for fans to be patient, as in wait 4 or 5 years after promotion before you expect to 6-8 finishes. I propose that teams like West Brom and Wolves will always scrap away between promotion and relegation but there are certain teams that have the 'foundations' whether they are quantifiable or not, to sustain a place in the league. Look at Newcastle as an example of a team that has gone down and come back up and achieved what is generally common place for them. Look at Villa, **** team but always finish around the same place. It just takes that right managerial appointment or that massive on pitch leader and boom.
My sympathies. Do you remember a player called Paul Donnelly, I'm sure he played for Thistle and Leeds?
Why does he? He is merely expressing his concern for the future of football and how money is seemingly dictating the amount of success a club can have. You sound cocky, you haven't been promoted yet you know...
