Shefki Kuqi wasted a glorious chance to register his first goal in United colours when he missed a 19th minute penalty after he had been fouled in the box.

His attempt to emulate Barcelona's spot-kick against Arsenal was more messy than Messi and after a stuttering run-up, a weak kick was easily saved by Sean McDermott.

But United's Greg McDermott found the net five minutes later when he hit a considerably harder shot from 12 yards in open play, following some good Newcastle pressure that had seen Michael Richardson and Phil Airey both go close.

The visitors equalised after 54 minutes when Josh Rees headed a left wing cross that bounced past Tim Krul via a couple of deflections.

Richardson almost won it for the home side in the final few minutes but after rounding the 'keeper his shot was cleared off the line.

But up popped Airey to head in a 92nd minute winner after Richardson had dispossessed the Arsenal right back and Michael Riley put a great ball across for Airey to head home from six yards.
