Yeah Gally as a winger and Vassell is 1 of the strikers. Atm Gally is primarily used as a winger, as we dont have any other, so i included him there. and yes, i would count Beckham as a winger too
I'll now show my age - Lenny Glover WAS a winger - both Gally and Beckham are more wide midfielders -whatever that really means..
We're light on the wings and we don't have a good impact striker at the moment (although Waghorn and Schlupp are injured) so we've emergency loaned young Nathan Delfouneso. I'd have liked to have seen a good youth product from one of the big clubs on loan. Someone like Frimpong (too good for us but in that mould) who is looking for first team football.
Alan Young used that quote. 'Wide midfield' players essentialy means the same as 'winger' but the word 'winger' is associated more with pace and skill while 'midfielder' is more on the players ability on the ball to pick a pass or make a tackle. So as you can see Gallagher fits none of those categories (apart from finding a good pass evey so often) which makes giving him a 'category' in which he fits is challenging. I personally think Gallagher would be best just behind the front two in the 'Lewis McGugan' role. Where he is able to thread through balls or shoot from long range, two traits he's reasonable at.
Trouble is that we don't play a formation that allows him to do this. At present, Gallagher is a winger/wide midfielder only when we don't have the ball. He'll track back and help out Peltier. However, against Swindon he didn't really do this part of his job and it was left to Danns mainly to come and help out which meant Ritchie had a lot of space and when they're LB cam forward as well, it was very productive for them. When we do have the ball, Gally will move very central and almost become a third, attacking, central-midfielder where he can play in between the lines and try and pick some passes whilst Peltier will overlap and give width. He actually did this quite well against Swindon and played some nice passes. I don't think he had as bad a game as some think because I've seen a few comments saying his positioning was awry. If they mean defensively then I agree but in an offensive sense, I think we need to understand the role he's playing and know what we should expect from him and he did his role (in an attacking sense) quite well on Saturday. If you remember, Nigel did the same with Oakley when he was last here and Danny Drinkwater performed the same role when he came on against Soton. Contrast this to the other flank where we'll have someone like Dyer who will hug the touchline and gives us natural width. This is why I think Marshall has been brought in to play instead of Dyer rather than instead of Gally. I actually like it because it gives us some tactically flexibility and the players a bit of freedom when attacking and allows for positional rotation to give our attacks a bit of unpredictability. We can also avoid the predictable format of getting wide and getting crosses reigning in because it doesn't suit our strikers and instead we can get one of our best players in terms of threading through balls in an area into which he can do this to get the service our strikers thrive on. As long as Gally can get his defensive game sorted, then he can play a big role for us because he is one of the most talented players at the club.
