With us occasionally flirting with the idea of a continental tour at times this year, it has got me all nostalgic, we have had some bloody good runs in europe in recent history, a lot of cracking memories (and some massive dissapointments) I really miss that thursday feeling (and the even better but sadly rarer tues/weds one) when the mighty toon would be touring the continent with sir bob at the helm, going up against the best and more than holding our own. We will return to those heights again for sure (hopefully sooner rather than later) and I would love to hear my fellow geordies stories from our previous jaunt's abroad (cause let's face it, besides the san-siro, de kuip (BELLAMY!!!!!!) we've been to many an obscure away game) Cant wait to see Tiote scaring the living poop outta europe in a Black & White shirt HTL
They were better days, I remember thinking at one stage we would go on and win the UEFA cup, damn you drogba!! Sadly I cant see these days returning with the fat man at the helm though
I wouldn't be so negative. If we didn't concede those two last minute goals in January, we'd be 4 points better off and in a great position.
I was optimistic about our chances, but now with rumours flying around about Barton not wanting to play and Enrique's head being turned by CL football I feel like we will just go backwards next season. I reckon we'll see very little of the transfer money aswell, why would Ashley change the habit of a lifetime?
I don't remember any of them, the only thing I remember is James ****ing Milner chipping a penalty over against Chelsea
Lets don't get caught into dreams of Europe. All we need to do is, for the next two seasons atleast, bring in a few more quality players, sort out our game plan, and learn to take our chances. We have a cracking full strength team, but we've shown that after the first 11, our squad is pretty ****e if you ask me. Our squad is paper thin. What i want to see our team doing, is winning the games that we're expected to do so. I'm pissed off with getting a few excellent results and then getting 1 point out of a very possible 6. We need to achieve stability, consistancy and build depth. We also need a better game plan at the back then stand off the opposition. How many games have we ended up drawing or losing a game that we've dominated? We don't take nearly enough chances, and quite a few games in which we get a dissappointing point or a loss, we could have been 3-0 up at half time. We could have been 3-0 up against Bolton. We dominated them, and only managed one goal and let in a sloppy one, to give Bolton an undeserved point, and us feeling like ****. It's the same every time we play teams like Stoke and Blackburn. We destroy them, but lose or get a ****ty point due to lack of organisation, not taking oppositions tactics seriously and not taking chances.
For once I actually agree with all of that, but if we did sneak into europe this season I'm pretty sure that you wouldnt be complaining about squad depth and such.
ah james milner, another one who slipped the head. He does have a canny knack for losing potentially great players wor mike don't he!!!! Personally though I don't think we're that far off, this year goes to show that anythings possible in the prem, you've got to be in it to win it. no-one thought we were ready for it when we last came up and we nearly had it all!!!!! My first european memory though was our drubbing of antwerp, was still quite young but we were **** hot that night
Never said this year Tash, boy you do my nut in sometimes. I was looking at tottenham doing so well in the CL and it got me thinking about when we were there and I thought it would be nice to reminisce a bit, and up you pop with all this we're not ready yet our squad is gash etc etc, a lot of that is maybe true but bloody hell man lighten up!!!! we're almost safe barring a nightmare, we've got some genuine class in the TEAM (not squad) and the boys are playing with heart and passion, let's remember past triumphs fondly and look forward to the future, because lets face it WE COULD BE IN BORO'S SHOES TTBWA
