My dad's been the same - after the shipyards closed he worked as a draughtsman in the US on a couple of "Geonavigational" Navy ships to be placed on both poles for supposed geographical studies & as a navigational aid to other navy ships in that area in the mid-eighties, then moved into the oil & gas industry and started doing the designs for the pipelines and what have you.
I used to think it was great growing up as I'd get a free toy everytime he came back and when he went to work in Nigeria, often a signed plane ticket or something from Newcastle players when we used to be in Europe as they flew to Schipol for connections like my Dad had to! Plus as it was around the time I lived in Sunderland, I used to like stopping at the maccy d's near the airport as it has the Newcastle badge in the window, I'd always make sure I sat next to it <laugh>!

Was thinking of retraining after uni as I'd done Engineering at A-level/BTEC NC & achieved Double Distinction, so I wasn't bad at it! Plus some of the agencies were telling me the other day on the phone (I was back home and they often ring asking for my dad) how many jobs are around in the industry and what I could earn - wouldn't mind doing that myself as it sounds a lot of hard work but a lot of reward and you get to travel the world.

I love it. Gives me 6 months holiday a year. Good money to enjoy my time off. There's loads of work at the mo if you are willing to go get it. I started as a welder. I'm Manager now and got involved in HSE and Emergency response. Off here tomorrow. Go into town for a week and then home for 4 weeks. I miss half the games and have a couple of season tickets. My wife and brothers, nephews benefit from that. If you are thinking about it, it's still well worth getting into. Try HSE as after you try it and maybe don't like, you can get a job anywhere with the HSE quals.

Stopped at a Glasgow travelodge with family years ago to see the science museum there and bloody hell, ive never seen so many shops with cages on the window and steel doors when we took a wrong turn.
