Good read about the Chairman that gave us the SoL and AoL, and how his ability to get them built on time and on budget allowed him to become Project director of the National Football Centre. Whatever you can say about him, he is a true Sunderland fan. http://www.shieldsgazette.com/news/...n_the_100m_national_football_centre_1_4183562
I couldn't agree more. Whatever people think of him and some of the critiscisms of his regime are valid, he delivered the SOL where others would not have ! It's a fine legacy that he should be proud of and we all should be grateful for ! Nice to see a genuine SAFC fan being called on to sort out a mess for the FA !
I did a project on the SOL when I was at uni, Murray did an amazing job. The SOL was one of the cheapest new stadia built in that era and probably the best. Where other clubs have gone into Administration or suffered from over imposing owners we have done very well, its a testament to Murray and SNQ that we are where we are today and not in the lower reaches of English football or even worse....
I still hate the name of our stadium (should have been called The Wearmouth Stadium in honour of the miners who worked there as well as for geographical locaton) and blame Murray for that, but I agree that his good points far outweigh his bad and that his heart is in the right place.
History will and indeed has dealt Bob a much kinder hand these days. Quite rightly he should be warmly welcomed by us all whenever if attends games. I shamefully also gave him much stick in my youth but later in life came to realise and understand that what he did was always in the clubs best interest. The gracious and honourable way he handled Nialls takeover for a nominal fee really, showed a true fan, not a greedy businessman. He got some things very wrong but many other things spot on but I do believe it was always with the club at heart. Top man.
