This act/agreement/law is a tad ****. If it is actually going to happen like described in the video, surely the internet will be no more?

It effectively means that you copy and paste will go, youtube will become ****, controversial topics will not exist and Joey Barton will be stopped using twitter with his quotes he puts on there.

Yup pretty much, the worst thing is it WAS SIGNED TODAY by 22 countries. Just needs to go through the EU and its European law, and I'm moving somewhere more tolerant, like North Korea

I can't help but think this will go down the same route as prohibition in America. It's unenforceable, soooooo many people will break it that it will be impossible to keep a lid on it all.

Yeah just look at what happened with Giggs' superinjunction. They'd have had to arrest half of twitter to enforce it!

Nah, Facebooks more than Google. Its almost personal. I dont use it but Id imagine Facebook going down would be the equivalent of a internet missile being launched.

Thats what you should be counting on. Imagine how much he has to lose if this act gets passed.

I ****ing hate it with a passion, only use it to organise things these days.
It's a sad world when you're not "popular" unless you have 1000+ friends on facebook.

That's ignoring all the selling of personal information.

Does he have the balls to act though? No.

He "told his subscribers to oppose SOPA" but didn't dare go to the levels of other major sites like Wikipedia. With all the crap he funnels through that site on a daily basis, it wouldn't kill him to put a little banner up for example or an email to all users.

Facebook is a good way to socialise with girls though, its gotten me good results thats all im going to say.

Also, facebook is a platform just like this, where people raise awareness of impotant issues like abortion, government corruption, world-wide news thats withheld in our media etc

Its just a form of advanced tracking but they have got you by the balls whatever you do, all calls and txts from phones go into a database, pretty much everything you do electronically is monitored, you might aswell play along and enjoy your freedom while we still have it.

****s going to hit the fan this year, there will be major frictions, this is the prophesied year of global change, will good overcome evil?

I honestly hope so but part of me thinks the evil is just too damn strong, ignorance is a powerful weapon, im willing to bet at least 90% or higher of this board doesnt think the government is as corrupt as it actually is. I bet some people here even think being in the EU is beneficial. I bet some think Iraq war was justified... or that we should have gone into lybia, or that weed should be illegal. The whole system is rigged and the rabbit hole goes down way deeper than most people would even consider possible.

ACTA does have some aspects that are beneficial though in terms of physical good copyright and patent infringements.

I know someone in the manufacturing industry who have had their revenues pillaged due to cheaper, lower quality copies of their goods being replicated and sold by ‘companies’ from abroad, even though the item they make is copyrighted and patented globally.

This chap I know has run his company for 25 years and built it from scratch. Due to the cuts in his revenue from copyrighted goods and trying to fight in the courts for the counterfeiters to stop, he’s had to reduce his working staff by close to 40% in the last 3 years. His business should be pretty much recession proof if patent and copyright law is adhered to.

The country where this counterfeiting is taking place seemed to have no interest in stopping the replication of these goods, but has signed up to the ACTA agreement and he’s hoping that it may assist in shutting down the illegal operation that has cost him millions in revenue and resulted in job losses.

From the internet perspective, some of these rules ARE needed in terms of copyright infringement and piracy.

I work as an IT business analyst and deal with numerous companies that have online products and a presence who have invested vast sums of money in their business. Is it fair that they do all the R&D, planning, promotions and maintenance of their products only to have knock off copies bandied about online for free or a fraction of the price?

The people who do this make their profits, yet with none of the hard work and it does impact on businesses and people in terms of job losses due to reduced revenues.

I’ve spent a long time looking at ACTA and working out how companies can still allow internet users to ‘promote’ their products via embeddable trailers, links, reviews, free trial versions etc but also how companies can protect their products.

It’s not an easy task to do and as far as online piracy is concerned; it’s near enough impossible to guarantee that a product won’t be ripped off, rebranded and repackaged and then cloned through various sites.

It takes months to get a site shut down for online piracy.

It takes minutes for them to create a new clone site and continue.

As for the freedom of speech online?

I see no discernable difference between me standing in a market place of a small town expounding vitriol to all or for me being on here and doing the same thing.

Say what you want but also accept the consequences.

Saying that the internet should be a free space where laws are not applicable isn’t going to work. It requires some form of governance, but most of all it requires social morals to define and punish what is wrong.

We do that on here with posters who overstep the mark in terms of racial denunciations and other infringements against what we deem to be decent.
