Ireland has admitted for the first time that its 'morally bankrupt' regime of the 1930s denied visas to desperate Jews trying to escape from Nazi persecution. Irish government to give pardon to Irishmen who sided against Nazis. Justice Minister Alan Shatter apologised for the way brave soldiers who 'deserted' the Irish Army to fight with the Allies during the Second World War were treated. He suggested the 4,983 servicemen, who were barred from jobs and State pensions on their return and condemned to poverty and stigma for the rest of their lives, were now likely to receive an official pardon.
So, UK residents currently calling on the government to stop immigration is OK but the Irish stopping immigration over 70 years ago is bad? They deserted their army to fight in a foreign army, what did the British army do to their own soldiers who did the same?
Well, the Irish closing it's borders to Jews is not much different to what the English public are calling on the UK government to do.
What of Context? They were members of the Irish army at their posts during a world war. They deserted their posts to join a foriegn army. What would have happened in England if this had happened?
In which they were 'neutral', nice bit of selective editing of facts there Ciaran. Do you count the free french as deserters too?
How is it selective editing? The facts are that they were members of the Irish army who deserted to fight in a foreign army. They were very lucky that they were not executed.
Eh? These people were Irish soldiers. The world was at war. They were needed at their posts. These guys deserted their posts. What part do you not understand?
You think if the Germans won the war, they would leave Ireland alone? Not many blonde hair blue eyed people there.....
Who said it was a bad thing? Many thousand of Irishman fought the Nazis. We are talking about members of the Irish army deserting their post.
How hard is this to understand? Fighting against the Nazis is not a bad thing, deserting your army for a foreign army is a bad thing.
