Rubbish. United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and now City are the clubs with high profiles. Spurs are no more high profile than Villa or Everton
Don't get me wrong Spurs are IMO a bigger club than Villa, Everton and West Ham but they don't have a larger profile than them, and I'm talking in terms of worldwide appeal.
Christ! You can't have travelled much. I see them all the time.* *When I say "all the time" I mean "hardly ever at all."
Me neither. When I went to Vegas last summer a guy instantly recognised my shirt and shouted "Chelsea". I also saw a fair few Chelsea shirts out there, only United shirts were more predominant. I saw Chelsea, Arsenal, United, Liverpool, Villa, West Brom. No Spurs Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Arsenal and United shirts were really the only Prem ones they sold when I was out there. I happened to meet and get a picture taken with Jermaine Defoe and Ian Wright out there. Defoe was really pleasant and seemed to have a lot of time for me, Ian Wright sligltly less so as I had my Chelsea shirt on. Defoe said he didn't mind Chelsea, maybe a closet Blue eh?
I can see where this is heading so before you say it we're not saying Spurs don't have a global fanbase, evidence suggests that they do, especially in South Africa, Canada, parts of USA etc all we are saying is they are not as high profile as the big PL clubs, that is a matter of Fact, not opinion
So, what you're really saying is that by challenging for the title and, at worst, finishing 3rd this season, above you, we are putting ourselves on the map, and will no doubt mop up all the foreign plastic Chelsea and United fans? Yeah, I can see the point you are trying to make
Who's challenging for the title? If you think you are guaranteed to finish above Chelsea and Arsenal then you are even more myopic than I thought. There is still 48 points to play for, mathematically even Newcastle and Liverpool could still yet finish in the top 4 although unlikely in my book. The Table after 22 games played last year: http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/premier-league/2010-2011/table/2011-01-16 We were 6 points behind Arsenal which is a larger gap than you are currently ahead of us. If I had said to you then that: - Blackpool (who were 10th) would be relegated - Birmingham (who were above Villa) would be relegated - Fulham (15th) and Villa (17th) would finish top half (8th and 9th) respectively - Liverpool and Everton (then 12th and 13th) would finish 6th and 7th you'd have accused me of lunacy. The fact is law of averages every season suggests a few teams (at least) will go on a good run. Win 3 or 4 games on the trot in this league and all of a sudden you could go from looking over your shoulder for relegation to suddenly dreaming of Europe. The reverse is true if you go on a losing streak. If I'd said to you after 22 games played last season w'e'd finish above Arsenal AND Man City, then clear of Spurs by a fair margin let's be honest knowing you HIAG you'd have laughed at me and said we were in a battle for 4th and that Spurs would be favourites. One thing I've learnt about this league is that you can't start realistically planning for next season and where you will finish until late April at the very earliest
The only country where Spurs have more fans in than us is Israel, and before you think i'm joking it's a fact, research merchandise sales etc
Funnily enough it actually is lol they had a article in the paper a year ago saying about where PL Clubs have the highest merchandise sales, can't remember them all but apart from the UK man u's highest was Asia, Ours was Africa and spurs was Israel
So, our first 22 games have been down to nothing but chance? What about the run we went on when Harry took over (and we were bottom of the league? Was that pure chance, too? And what about Harry's first full season in charge, when we finished 4th for the first time in our EPL history? I suppose that was nothing but chance? Going back further than that, to our two consecutive 5th place finishes under Martin Jol, I suppose they were nothing but chance, as well? You know, sometimes it really is best to think through your replies before you commit words to the net
