Kenny hails 'magnificent' Reds.

Kenny Dalglish praised the 'magnificent' performance of his players after Liverpool secured a place in the Carling Cup final with a 2-2 draw against Manchester City at Anfield on Wednesday night. Goals from Steven Gerrard (penalty) and Craig Bellamy cancelled out efforts from Nigel de Jong and Edin Dzeko to give the Reds a 3-2 victory on aggregate and set up a Wembley meeting with Cardiff City next month.

Dalglish was eager to pay tribute to the spirited performance of his players having been critical of their showing in Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Bolton Wanderers.

The boss told his post-match press conference: "The players were magnificent. Everything we thought was lacking on Saturday was there in abundance tonight, so they deserve great credit for the performance and result.

"I think there is only Fabio (Aurelio) and Doni in the squad who hasn't played in this competition, so every single member of the squad apart from the two lads has made a contribution and I think that is a great reflection of the players we have at the club. A lot of them who got us in this position maybe didn't play tonight, but their efforts and commitment won't be dismissed easily.

"It's great for the people who have stood by us because it's not been too easy a time for Liverpool Football Club over the last couple of years or so, and it is fantastic for the new owners. I've said many times before, if we all stick together, we'll be a stronger force - and this is a huge reward for everybody that's got any affiliation to Liverpool Football Club in any way, shape or form."

Reporters were keen to get Dalglish's thoughts on the performance of Bellamy, who capped a lively display against his former club with the tie's decisive goal.

The Wales striker played a fast one-two with Glen Johnson inside a crowded box before firing past Joe Hart on 74 minutes to seal the 3-2 aggregate win.

Dalglish said: "He showed a lot of quality. It's all very well talking about his effort and commitment - that is always there. Tonight he was fantastic in the quality of his performance as well.

"We've spoke about him many times in the past and waxed lyrical about him, and rightly so. He was fantastic tonight, but then every single one of them was fantastic. Steven Gerrard sat in a position that probably isn't his own, but he sacrificed himself for the sake of the team and the club. That is great testimony to him.

"We were delighted with everybody, but certainly Craig put in a fantastic performance."

The victory over City means Liverpool will make their debut at the new Wembley against Cardiff in what will be their first trip to the national stadium since 1996.

Dalglish quipped: "I don't know when the last time we were there was, but we know where we are going. We've maybe forgotten the route because we've not been there for a while, but I'm sure the driver will remember!

"For everybody at the football club, this is the players' way of saying thanks very much."

Next up for Liverpool is an FA Cup fourth round encounter with Manchester United at Anfield on Saturday. While delighted with his side's efforts in securing a cup final berth against Cardiff, Dalglish was keen to stress there is still much for the Reds to play for over the coming weeks.

The manager said: "We've got to Wembley. That's all we've achieved so far. We've not been there for a while, so I think that in itself is an achievement - but that's not where our ambitions stop. We want to continue and do as well as we can between now and the end of the season.

"We'll enjoy the moment tonight for a wee while and then get ourselves concentrated on a difficult game on Saturday."

Craig: It's the perfect final for me.

Craig Bellamy admits he cannot wait to face his hometown club in the Carling Cup final. The 32-year-old was born in Cardiff and enjoyed a loan spell there last season, so was delighted when they saw off Crystal Palace in the semi-final on Tuesday night.

And after scoring the decisive goal which sent Liverpool to Wembley, he said: "The omens were looking good going into tonight after I saw Cardiff go through.

"I was delighted for them and this couldn't be a better final for me. Cardiff means so much to me. And to score the winning goal against my old side to set up this final makes it a perfect night.

"I have never played at Wembley either, so it will mean so much for me to go there and try to win a trophy. I went to watch a couple of Liverpool's finals at the Millennium Stadium and played there myself in the Community Shield.

"But now we're playing a Welsh side at Wembley. It's funny how football turns out."

Kuyt: We'll be ready.

Dirk Kuyt admits the home Anfield dressing room was buzzing following Liverpool's progression to the Carling Cup final - but insists the players will put all thoughts of a trip to Wembley aside as they gear up for another huge match on Saturday. The Reds played out a pulsating 2-2 draw with Manchester City to secure a 3-2 aggregate semi-final victory over the Barclays Premier League table toppers and set-up a February 26 showdown with Cardiff City.

Jubilant celebrations from both Liverpool players and fans greeted the final whistle, but with an FA Cup fourth-round tie against Manchester United to come on Saturday, Kuyt is adamant Kenny Dalglish's side will be fully focused on the challenge.

He told Liverpoolfc.tv: "We can be happy about what we have achieved in reaching Wembley, but we have to put that aside because there's another massive game coming up on Saturday against Manchester United and it would be great to knock them out as well.

"I think we are used to playing every three days from when we were playing in Europe in the Champions League. We were playing big games every two days and that's what Liverpool Football Club should be about. It's great to have two great games in a week and, like I said, we are all focusing already on the next game and we're desperate to win it.

"We have to think of the fans after the game last Saturday (at Bolton). It was very disappointing for us and must have been very disappointing for the fans as well. But the way they were behind us (against Manchester City) was just unbelievable and it's great credit to the supporters."

Liverpool delivered the perfect response to their Bolton disappointment with a lively showing against City, and Kuyt believes the display proves the Reds can match anybody in the Barclays Premier League.

He added: "We were very disappointed about the result at Bolton but more disappointed with ourselves because we know we're better than that.

"I think that is one thing we showed against City - that we can compete with the best teams in England - and that's the only way to reserve (a place in) the final. The performance the team put in was great. I think the team worked really hard and we deserved to go to the final."

Kuyt was one of several stand-out performers for Liverpool against Roberto Mancini's men having been handed a place in Dalglish's line-up. It's a position he's eager to retain for Saturday's encounter with United having faced stiff competition for a regular starting XI berth this season.

The Dutchman said: "Obviously I can't be happy about the games I've played so far this season but I just want to be involved more, especially in the important games and just try to work hard and show myself in games like this.

"Hopefully I can be involved again in the game on Saturday because all the lads in the dressing room can't wait for the next one."

The game against Cardiff will represent Liverpool's first major final since the 2007 Champions League showpiece against AC Milan in Athens.

Kuyt was on target on that occasion, but it wasn't enough as the Reds suffered a 2-1 defeat in Greece - and the Dutchman remains as determined as ever to end his wait for a winners' medal with the club.

"I've been close," he said. "Obviously we played in the final of the Champions League, we've been second in the league but second place doesn't count. So now we have a chance to win a trophy and I want to make sure we get it."

Gerrard: Bellamy the new Gary Mac.

Steven Gerrard believes Craig Bellamy can have the same impact for Liverpool as Gary McAllister during the treble season. The 32-year-old Welshman scored the decisive goal to break Manchester City hearts and set up a Carling Cup final meeting with Cardiff City.

It was Bellamy's eighth strike since being released by City last summer despite not being in the starting 11 week in, week out.

For Gerrard, the striker's performances are reminiscent of McAllister, who also arrived at Anfield in the twilight of his career and went on to help the club win five trophies in a year.

"Craig has been superb since he's come in, he's a fantastic professional who works really hard and he got his rewards here," Gerrard told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"He was a menace all night - that's what type of player he is. He's in your face, he runs in behind, he doesn't let you settle on the ball and I'm sure if he carries on he can have the impact at this club that Gary McAllister did."

Gerrard and co dispatched the league leaders with the help of a raucous Anfield crowd, who responded to the weekend's defeat to Bolton by recreating the atmosphere of a Champions League encounter.

"People sign for this club to play in front of atmospheres like that," added Gerrard. "The lads are talking about it now, all the new signings.

"I'm sure the fans are going home very happy and already planning their trips to Wembley.

"We knew it, we knew if we could stay in this tie until the second leg that we'd have a huge advantage with our supporters. They were the key tonight. It was the kind of response we all wanted. The manager had a go at us and rightly so, and it was important that we showed the fans a massive reaction."

Championship hopefuls Cardiff now await Liverpool, but having been given a scare by lower league Birmingham City in the 2001 League Cup final, there is no danger of complacency from Gerrard.

"A big well done to everyone who has taken part in the Carling Cup so far, but the key message now is that it's not done," said the 31-year-old.

"Arsenal slipped up against Birmingham last year when they were massive favourites. I'm sure we'll be massive favourites but we've got to show Cardiff respect and put in the kind of performance we put in tonight. It's going to be the game of their lives, they're going to be right up for it. They are going to play at a level they've not played at before so it's important that we don't drop our standards. We've got to raise our game and if we do, I'm sure we can lift the cup."

Liverpool have not reached a final since 2007 when they lost to AC Milan in the Champions League.

For Gerrard it will also be a first trip to Wembley in a Liverpool shirt.

"It's been too long for this club to not be in a major cup final, so it's nice to finally get there," he said.

"It's going to be superb for myself. I've led the boys out at Cardiff before but to lead them out at the new Wembley stadium is going to be a special occasion for myself.

"Tonight was a tough game but we were brave, we were bold and we attacked, and we got our reward."

Next up for Liverpool is Saturday's FA Cup fourth round tie with Manchester United at Anfield.

Gerrard added: "We've got to dust ourselves down and get our recovery in because in just over 48 hours we've got a massive game in the FA Cup and we want to do the same in that competition - we want to go a long way."

Glen: They made a difference.

Glen Johnson has hailed the Liverpool supporters for the part they played during Wednesday night's Carling Cup semi-final victory over Manchester City. On an emotional night for Kenny Dalglish and his players, the Kop crowd generated an atmosphere that was a throw-back to some of the most famous European nights at Anfield.

And Johnson was under no illusions that when such passionate support teems down from the stands, the players on the field are given an enormous boost.

"It makes such a big difference when the crowd are like that, they're famous for their atmosphere and it was one of those days," said Johnson.

"The lads are buzzing. It was a great result and we're pleased to get to the final but we haven't won anything yet. I think it was just the way the lads hung in there and stuck together. We had a game plan and we just went out there and tried to work our socks off because we knew were only 90 minutes away from the final."

Johnson was pivotal in the build-up to what proved to be Liverpool's winner, exchanging crisp passes with Craig Bellamy inside Joe Hart's penalty box before the Welshman swivelled and struck to send Anfield into delirium and Liverpool to Wembley.

The striker, who led the Red line tirelessly all evening, was deservedly awarded man of the match, and Johnson said: "He's been fantastic for us at the moment, his work rate is up there and you probably won't get a better free transfer."

Dalglish's stern words in the aftermath of Saturday's defeat at the Reebok seemed to have had an effect on his players as they fought tooth and nail to secure a place in the final against a table-topping City side.

Johnson admitted: "We knew we were off-par against Bolton and that's quite unlike ourselves but we knew we needed to bounce back with a good performance and I think we did that today. We're pleased to get to Wembley there but we haven't won anything yet, we've got another game in front of us (against Cardiff) so we'll go into that with the same mentality as today and see what happens."

When asked if he felt the Reds had ample time to recover before another tough fixture against rivals Manchester United on Saturday, Johnson responded optimistically.

He said: "The boys are fine, it's a normal game for us, the work rate is there and the lads will be fine. I think three or four days will be plenty."
