would the step (or ramp) create downforce at the expence of aerodynamic speed? I hope the FIA revise the rule to help make the cars look less ugly.

It's to increase airflow under the car and therefore maximise the performance of the diffuser. I think it was Toyota started the trend in 2009, it's become more important though since the ban of double diffusers and now exhaust blown diffusers, they need to find ways to scavenge back the rear downforce they've lost.

That is the F1 equivalent of having a broken nose after someone punching it.

So the FIA punches it and breaks its nose in the attempt of stopping it punching another guy...who was also given a broken nose by the FIA?

    The FIA are bullies!!

Well you certainly can't accuse Caterham of not being radical...

This must probably be the ugliest F1 car I've seen since the 2004 Williams.

If that nose is the result of a loophole left open by the FIA, please close it ASAP.

those atrocities on the 2004 williams remind me of a giant pair of tarantula fangs.

This is the best I can be bothered to do right now. I want to do one from a different angle, might be tricky though.

To be honest, that'll probably have more downforce than the 2012 HRT!

Just noticed something on the Caterham which makes it look even worse in my eyes- below the number on the side pod is a QPR badge!

Off topic, football related rant to follow...

[NSFW]I know Tony Fernandes owns both the football team and Caterham, but does he really feel the need to advertise his football team on an F1 car? It would annoy me further still that the F1 team are based (currently) 20 miles from another football club of a similar standard, who even play in the same colours that Caterham race in, and he feels the need to buy a London club, and give Bernie more money!! Thankfully, Norwich turned him away because they weren't happy with the control he wanted, and that control may well have ruined QPR's chances of Premier League survival, so I'm not too bitter.[/NSFW]

They say it was the first car to pass the crash tests. I'm not sure it passed them at all.
