Bang on the money for me, I would never begrudge any player for wanting to take their career further. I dare say that on the premier league stage, Maynard probably won't stay at Wigan for too long regardless of their league position at the end of the season.

I hope we sign him as we're in desperate need of a quality finisher and he seems to tick all boxes for us, ie. he has obvious talent, he's still got years ahead of him and most importantly for Wigan, he'll be relatively cheap for a striker at this level.

With all respect to Wigan Athletic, you or a Swansea/Wolves/Bolton/Blackburn would be the best that NM could hope for.
He's a decent player but he's never going to attract a Man U

There is probably a bigger gap in talent between Utd and us, and us and Bristol City though and if he can make the jump to lower PL standard and score enough to keep us up, he'll be a legend in Wigan, not that that says much, our town 'hero' is George Formby :emoticon-0114-dull:.

Nice article as always bill but I have some issues as you said someone would. I agree totally that Nicky has the right to do his best to achieve his dream of playing in the premiership and I wish him well in that quest. Like a lot of other City supporters I want to see him score goals in the premiership so I can say to my fellow viewers that he used to wear our colours.

My problem is the fact that he went in to his final year of contract refusing to re-sign with City after we had supported him during his "injury year". He could have re-signed for an extra year or two and built in the get out clause that would meet his needs to move on. Perhaps with a full commitment on his part his value on the market might have improved and both parties would have benefitted.

I suppose now we have to wait until Nicky moves on from his next club, which I suspect he will sooner rather than later, so we can benefit from the sell on percentage that I hope we will include in any deal.

Things could have been done so much better but nonetheless Nicky I wish you well!

Thanks for the constructive view Mike, and I can understand the view. The fact remains though that signing anything with City, release clause or not, would prob cost him between half to £1m. If a club has a budget of say, £10m for Maynard, they'll spend £4.5m on wages (3yr deal), £3m on NI/pension...by not having to pay £2-£5m transfer fee, the player's agent can say "Well, we'll have a cut of that, thank you very much".

Back to original point, how many people would have that pen hovering over a contract, knowing that little bit of ink could cost them £1m?!

Guess you have not seen much of the championship as he is one of the most talked about players in the championship. Did miss most of last season through injury but still scored many in the games he did play. To judge him would be from two years ago when he finished top goal scorer in the league (above Andy Carroll). He also that season came runner up for world goal of the year behind messi with this goal
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCsfGkrqDQk though most will argue his was better but messi could side foot a goal and it would be called amazing.
He is a striker who will score most of his goals around the box so needs the ball to feet (not in the air like we have played too often). I think he plays best off a big man who can take defenders on and then give Nicky the space to score. Goal record is about 1 in 2.5 ish games for us with poor service at time.

Heres hoping you guys sign him and give us money <cheers>

He was a legend in Bristol until he began to treat our club with contempt

Just as well we're not in the Premier League or we'd have 40 odd players all doing the same....

The word in the local rag is that Nicky Maynard will not be coming to wigan as there was nothing positive put down in black and white( but it was just a informal enquiry that was made as to the players availabilty last week)so i don`t think any contact was made with the player himself. sorry lads but thats what happens in the prem some times not a nise place to be, <sorry>
