I have been to many city matches over the years at Carrow Road, and there are loads that will stick in the mind, such as Milk cuo semi final 2nd leg against the binners. Our first euopean game against Arnhem, the home leg against Bayern. Going further back there was Dave Stringer's goal agaist Palace (I think), when he was so overcome he was in tears.... the list goes on and on. But for me, I would pick the game against Liverpool at Carrow when they beat us 3 - 5. For sheer excitement and great football, that was the one for me. Peters scoring for us, Fairclough hat trick for them. I couldnt speak for a few days after that after shouting myself hoarse. Which one was yours?
I can't remember the year, but it was the first game I was allowed to attend with no parental supervision! I went with a school friend (Bungay Grammar) to watch us beat Sunderland 4 - 2! When I got home my Mother said, "If you can keep up that tradition, you can go every week!"
Maestro -Wasn't that THE Justin Fashanu goal? Slight thread drift - an away game. It was Highfield Road around 1980.The Coventry keeper was injured in the warm up and City agreed to allow a pre match change. It was 5-4 to Coventry and we missed an injury time penalty to make it 5-5.
Yes it was CT. I was in the South stand, and in the perfect position to see him turn, and to follow the flight of the ball. As soon as he hit we knew it was in. It was one of those 'in the right place at the right time' moments.
I was at t'other end wit'yobs.Best home match.April 21 1973 Norwich 2 Palace 1. We had to win to stay up and Palace score in the first half.Stringer I think with the winner possibly Colin Suggett with the equaliser.
This really is an impossible task maestro, but you have reminded me of that great night in 1985. I was with my mate, standing slap bang middle of the Barclay terrace the atmosphere was electric. City lost 1-0 in the first leg (Mich D'Avray for the Binners), and Ipswich were favourites to go on and make the final. However, as soon as Dixie Deehan's deflected shot found the back of the net in the first half, the momentum was with us. I'll never forget that moment when Mark Barham swung in that late corner and Brucie powered home that header. The whole of the Barclay, (well not the bit were the Ipswich fans were), went absolutely ballistic, the noise was deafening. Me and my mate were standing in front of a crush barrier, unbeknown to me the pillock had draped his arm behind him over aforesaid barrier. When the goal went in the crowd surged forward crushing his arm. I was jumping up and down going mental taunting the Binners through the wire fencing, when I suddenly looked round and he was nowhere to be seen? I looked down and there he was in a heap clutching his arm in absolute agony. But you know what, he refused to go to hospital until after the end of the match when all the celebrations had died down. He said that we might never get the chance beat Ipswich in a semi-final again and he wasn't going to miss a thing ! Happy days !!! .. OTBC....CTI....ILWT
Far too many happy afternoons/evenings to remember. If I was going to single out 1 game I guess it would have to be when we slaughtered poor little Sutton United 8-0. I felt from the very first whistle it was going to be shooting practice despite Sutton dumping Coventry out the cup in the previous round. It was a thoroughly professional performance at a time when were one of the best teams in the PL.
Yes. I go along with the Palace match for home matches although the Leyton Orient away (24/4/72) when we gained promotion to the old 1st Division for the first time takes some beating. At least 15,000 City supporters there. And the following Saturday was the celebration of Champions at Watford. But I was only 21 then and would probably act a bit different nowadays than the loopy way we did those two nights.
I'm certain to change my mind on this (probably several times!), but the one that's sprung to mind was the first leg play-off against Wolves. Malky!!
That takes me back when we were in the old division 2 and had Sheff Wed away for our last game. Although we did not have to win to get promoted it would have been nice. As it was we lost but thankfully Leicester messed it up at Shrewsbury 0-0. We had well over 12,000 at that one. The entire Leppings Lane (both tiers & standing room lower tier). What an incredible atmosphere
My favourite home game happens to be my first game - League Cup semi-final 2nd leg against 1p5wich. I will NEVER forget the noise at that game. Great memories.
The difference is, JWM, we do it on a thread about memories, whereas you lot bring it up on nearly every thread to counter remarks about your current poor run of form! Do you see the difference?
In recent times it has to be against Derby County towards the end of last season. It was a game we didn't think we would be able to get to, but in the end fate dictated we would be there. My abiding memory is of Robbie Savage being substituted right at the end of the game and taking an age to leave the pitch, time wasting for some reason? Then the goal, six minutes into injury/extra time. I'm sure to this day that not only the entire amount of fans leapt off the ground, but the stadium did as well. ILD OTBC
Bayern at home was a special night, the noise that night i will never ever forget, dont think it will ever be rivaled. Liverpool away on the final day of the old kop, that was a great day. As mentioned the semi final win against the binners will always be up there, Arsenal away 2-0 down at h/time then a 4-2 win, there is so many, just remembered shef wed when we needed a point to go up, lost 2-1 with a fan on the pitch but still went up. You could do a flip thread to this one......worst moments?
Last game of the promotion winning season of 85/86, the year after we won the Milk Cup. We beat Leeds 4-0 in a meaningless game as we had already won the title but that's what made it so special for me as I was mascot that particular day and got to run around the pitch with the players during the lap of honour as they paraded the trophy to the fans! Still got the photographs at home of me with Steve Bruce, Dave Watson and Chris Woods and I'll never forget 'slamming' in a penalty against the latter - pretty good for a 9 year old! The only downside of the day was when Kevin Drinkell (my favourite player up until that day) refused to have his picture taken with me as he was too busy warming up
Without Savage's age-long subsitution during which he fully deserved the heckling, the game would have ended right then, and we admittedly would have drawn, and we might have lost momentum for the 2nd automatic spot. Best goal celebration i've witnessed, "the place is going bananas" as the immortal radio norfolk commentary goes
