In truth Ron, I enjoy my anonymity. I live in a part of the world where I have mostly trees wherever I look. So to sit outside at night with the light on, leaves me feeling like I'm on a flood lit stage.
I quite liked BALLYWATT in the first at Leicester. Finished 3/4 length behind Simonsig in a PTP; Kim Bailey's blog says he'd prefer better ground and thinks he'll finish 4th so I'm slightly put off however at 20/1 I think I'll have a small e/w
Morning, all. Cor blimey its raining this morn. And on the torrential side of torrential to boot. Anyway down to ‘brass tacks’ and I quite like one at huge, and I do mean huge, odds. I continue: First Act (2.40 Leicester) – what a lovely name for a mare by the way. My regular readers will recall me putting this one up on her seasonal bow, at Hereford, but despite strong market support she ultimately disappointed. The same was true when First Act tackled hurdles for the first time in a hot novice event at Newbury as she pulled up behind the useful Kentford Grey Lady. The mare is thought a lot, lot better than what she has shown to date and it is hoped that today she can show it for the talented Tom Symonds (Mr Henderson’s former assistant). No way should First Act be an 100/1 chance (the price with Bet365 currently) and she most certainly appeals as an each-way wager. Is also the excellent Denis O’Regan’s only ride of the day. Morning lads. Everyone seems well and in fine fettle. My only one today is a play on Evella in the 3.40 at Leicester. This one has consistently won off marks in the 120's. He ran in the van during his seasonal reappearance and faded towards the end of the race. It 's highly likely that was a pipe opener to get to full fitness. Maybe today's the day. Maybe it isn't but at 9/1 i'm happy to back it each way and hope for the best.
I don’t know if anyone else has highlighted this but the move by ‘The Guardian’ last week to totally wipe out there printing of racecards during the week (with the exception of major Festivals they will now print a maximum of 1 race a day in the paper – their elected ‘race of the day’ is a very bad one for the sport as it takes racing ‘out of the shop window’ for so many. Hope the rest of the print media don’t follow suit otherwise the sport could really suffer.
SBC: That's gloomy news indeed, but I guess one could see something like this happening. Does it boil down to too many meetings, too many below-average horses, too much racing, etc.? Guardian's probably fed-up with all the set-up and printing it takes. Not enough overall interest? Seems the number of existing horseracing enthusiasts is just not enough, so something must be done quickly to garner more interest in the sport?
Swanny, Apparently not enough interest for the amount of space in the paper, so racing coverage is going to be more opinion based work (such as furore over Ascot, criticism of BHA new chief etc) rather than form. The online stuff is supposedly being increased, but I think its a trend that we might get to see. I guess with the internet and the good work the RP do, there is less need for printed paper form in its basic sense. Sad but nothing to write home about.
Nass: Quite right. Kinda strange, all my racing now is done through the internet, I mean one just does not buy a UK newspaper here as far too expensive - ask Oddy. So guess it must be that I must be set in the old ways, you know, the old Sporting Life at breakfast time. Ah, wonderful memories. Things are indeed much better now, but there were a few great things in the old days!
I find the Newspaper an outdated concept actually, I haven't purchased one for years. Full of yesterday's news. The only one I ever used to buy was the Sunday Sport anyway, top entertainment value (is it still going??). Suffice to say everything is available online these days, especially race cards with clickable form links
I use the RP racecards. You can see the race click on the horse/trainer/jockey/etc to see the latest. Much better than just looking at a paper. I suspect anybody interested in the form does likewise surely? Or else buys the Racing Post Paper? If they filled the same space with comment then that would be a positive step in my opinion. Suspect that the lost space might be filled by yet more football tripe though!
