It has been designed to slip under the radar but honest Harry is up in court today for tax evasion or stealing from the public purse. Now I am not going to predict the outcome or mention anything more about the case.

Although I bet John Terry will get more headlines and press space later this week......just wonder what standards journos apply now.

Well, we all know the answer to that. But I don't think the decline in professional competence and ethics is the issue here.

It is a fact that stealing from the public purse is viewed as a lesser offence than other types of stealing by the overwhelming majority of the public, and a sizable minority regard it as not stealing at all or as being "fair game". I would suggest that at least two-thirds of not606 members have either "stolen" from the public purse or would have no hesitation in doing so if they go the chance.

They would have all sorts of justifications for doing so. That the government (or whatever public body they are stealing from) would only waste the money, or would spend it on something they had not voted for or did not approve. That the government (etc) had cheated them on some previous occasion and it was just tit for tat. That they cannot afford to hire a good tax lawyer, but if they had one their liability would be reduced or eliminated, etc, etc.

The murky borderline beween "tax evasion" (not paying those taxes you are legally required to pay) and "tax avoidance" (using legal loopholes to minimise your liability) also makes it harder to pronounce clear condemnations.

I would guess that, with the exception of some Nordic countries where ethical standards are higher, Britain is less culpable than most countries in this respect. In the Dominican Republic, from where I am presently posting, only a minority of the population pay for electricity. The rest either rig up a connection themselves or bribe the meter reader or billing office clerks. Politicians blatantly divert millions of dollars into their own accounts and are re-elected by voters who actually admire them for doing so. Politicians who claim to be "clean" are either disbelieved or ridiculed as suckers.

Because Redknapp is a football manager he will be frowned upon by the majority of supporters, but only because he manages a rival and successful club. (If it were Saint Christopher Powell in the dock, most posters here would be falling over themselves to defend him). In any other line of business many people, maybe a majority, will be saying that the only thing Redknapp has done wrong is to get caught, and they would have done the same given the opportunity.

The bookies aren't stupid: they still make Onest Arry favourite for the England job because he'll get the same verdict as Steven Gerrard.

Yes, they are. They made Charlton 14-1 for the title, when we all knew it would be a walk in the park.

You only have to look at Harry's wiki page and understand the very basics of theiving to form the basis of a decision on Harry.

This man is a disgrace to football, its followers and this country. When all the country is starving and on its arse, he nicks from it.

Still he has a few aces up his sleeve....expect the Dr note to come out, then the FA letter of appointment.

On top of this watch Andy Gray and Richard Keys get a nick because of their on air comment.
