Pele is not the greatest player ever. Maradona is, and messi will have to do more on the international stage to overtake him.

Maradona pretty much won the world cup on his own in 88, the Argentina team of the day was at best a quarter final team, but with Maradona in it they won. Yes we Englanders harp on about hand of God etc but ask anyone outside our shores and Brazil then the majority will only have one answer on the greatest. He almost repeated the feat in 1990! He also won the Seria A with Napoli which for them was like the toon winning the Prem.

Pele had a great team around him, like Messi does. Messi as so far not done it internationally.

So in conclussion, Pele talks out his backside and Messi needs to join the toon and win the premier league with us.

IMO Messi is the greatest player ever already, taking everything into account.

This is undoubtedly biased( as I'm only 16) but I REFUSE to believe that anyone could have been better than Messi?!
Especially considering how much quikcer the game is today - this is something it seems not all of you are taking into account...

Its harder to stand out in today's game. But Messi stands out as much as any ever has done.

I can totally understand why the younger generation think Messi, and maybe he will be one day. But for me he hasnt proved himself in a poorer team, He simply hasnt stood out internationally and has the best team in the world around him at Barca. Not saying he couldnt do that but until he does there always be a question mark around that.

Also while the game is quicker these days it was harder in the old days. If Messi had been around in the 80s he would have got kicked all over as Maradona was. But because he was stocky and very strong he could take a battering, not sure Messi could handle the same teatment.

I remember a canny few years ago asking Gerry Daly who was the best player he'd ever played with or against, he thought George Best and Maradona were close but Maradona shaded it, interestingly whilst he thought Maradona was the best player he also said Eusebio was the hardest to play against.

I was speaking to a few of the old posties at work last night on the late shift about Pele, they pretty much said Pele was unbelieveable for a while - but then Maradonna came along and they all agreed he obliterated Pele. Likewise they can't understand how Messi is this good now, although they did admit they only watch him when Barca are on ITV <laugh>

And how many great goals has he scored for Argentina? Who is it giving him the ball for almost every one of these goals?

People saying that what I said was bollocks but provide no reasoning just makes no sense. We are having a debate and I suggested that Messi's indifferent form for Argentina compared to his form for Barca was actually down to Xavi and Iniesta being the real stars at Barca. Does anyone else have a better hypothesis? Cos I haven't heard one yet. Messi's form for Argentina is actually very strong evidence for there being something at Barcelona provides the perfect environment for him to flourish. My suggestion was Xavi and Iniesta. How is that bollocks?

Difference is, Messi is played completely different for Argentina. He is the one that sets everyone up, which Argentinas strikers manage to **** up. He managed 4 goals and 10 assists last year for Argies, would of been a lot more assists, if Argies strikers weren't missing sitters so much.

The whole must do well/ win a world cup is bollocks anyway imo, the Champions League is better these days and harder to win and Messi performs season in, season out. He will probably be the CL top scorer in history in 3-4 seasons.

Messi has 19 goals and 20 assists for Argentina in 66 games. He plays a completely different role than what he plas for Barca, this is what people fail to realise. Argentina have a lot of attacking talent so Messi plays a much more creative role.

He has been top scorer in the Champions League 3 years in a row, and is 8th on the all time list, 28 goals off the top.

Edit: And he is joint top scorer atm this season.

Exactly, so the creator's role is less appreciated than the finisher's! Further support for my suggestion! Xavi Hernandez is the best player in the world :)

But can Xavi play Messi's striker role? Messi can do both, while Xavi certainly does have an eye for goal he certainly wouldnt be able to fill Messi's boots

Also, to everyone saying "Pele isn't the greatest because he had a great team around him" as evidence to support claims that Messi is the best......errrmm....obviously you don't rate the current Barca team...

Messi is a winger, would he excel in Xavi's deeper midfield role? No. That argument works both ways.

They are saying that while Pele got the goals, other players were better. Where Messi scores goals and is a great player.
