I think the modern day footballers are the best. There is a much wider field of competition now. there is no way Pele would score 1000+ goals in the modern game. To score 40 in a season is pretty special, Messi deserves to be mentioned as an all time great, even though i don't particularly like him.

Well I agree with you about modern footballers being the best, however I think it's about who was best relative to the other players of their era, and how long they stayed the best for (so you can't discount Pele in this discussion)

 

How can you hate Barcelona? Owned by the fans, play the best football, frequently sponsored by charities such as UNICEF and always piss off the fascist Dictator's club! What could be better?

Well, people always say they play the best football but personally I find it quite boring watching Xavi and Iniesta buggering about around the edge of the area going nowhere for the whole game.

But I still quite like Barca regardless.

 

Because of the unashamed bias UEFA give them. And the fact they're a bunch of diving ****s, especially Sergio Biscuits, who if i ever meet him, i will seriously injure him.

 

Yeah, the diving is ridiculous, but sadly it is typical of pretty much every club in Italy/ Spain/ Portugal, it's certainly not restricted to Barcelona, although I agree that Busquets is really bad for it!

Can't really argue with the UEFA bias in recent years, but I don't think it's too bad. It's not as bad as the favouritism Fergie has been shown over here by the FA for 25 years.

I'm with Kyle on this one (coincidence that it's my name too?), I REALLY don't like Barca, although I don't like Madrid either...and I say this as a Canadian who's been supporting Spain since before this generation was winning anything. I have the utmost respect for the way the team plays, they're undeniably incredible - but like Madrid they spend huge money to attain the best players in the country and from South America, and so although its completely fair to criticise Madrid for spending hand over fist, the only difference is that their owner can afford to, and Barca spend money they don't have. (Maybe I'm biased because I'm a Valencia fan and we can't keep up to either...)

 

As for Messi, if he keeps up his present ability, he definitely should be under consideration for best ever, but I'm on the side of 'he hasn't sustained it long enough yet'.

And for anyone discounting his poor play for Argentina because of his teammates, that's BS hypocracy! You discount Pele's international feats because his teammates were so good, but you don't do the same with considering how AMAZING Messi's Barcelona teammates are. The fact is, thus far he has underachieved and not replicated his club form for his country - and I'm sure at some point he will, and when that happens I'll applaud him, but up to now he's been disappointing in the sky blue and white.

 

Whats so funny about that? People keep saying you have to win the world cup to be considered a true great when it is no where near the highest level of competition available. You maybe at most play one or two world class sides, whereas in a domestic league/champions league are playing against top opposition week in week out. The fact that the World cup is even considered to be the height of competition is a joke, beating North Korea isnt a challenge.
