I dont mind him thinking he's the best - but he slates other players as he does it. Theres no need for that, its not like Messi says "Im better than Pele". Twat.

Maradona was a differen't class to Pele and that really says something! Yes Pele scored the most goals but he played alot longer and arguably in alot worse leagues.

Maradona looked so at ease on the ball, he had mastered it and could put it where he wanted...He basically won the Italian league by himself, by dragging Napoli to the championship, I dont think Pele could have done this!

While it is true messi has a hell lot of goals compared to pele, his goals are mainly in the best/second best depending on personal choice in the world, pele scored all his in two leagues, brazil and usa military and non competitive games

    My Personal Top 5

1 - Messi (if he avoids a tragic injury and his career lasts a natural lifespan)

2 = "Garrincha" Dos Santos ( true brazilian great, but not the beckham boy Pele is, starred in 2 world cup wins)

= Maradonna (starred in 2 WC wins, legacy speaks for itself)

4 - Alfredo Di Stefano (Real Madrid and Spain great - although also from Argentina, many from the time would argue he should be first)

5 - "Fat" Ronaldo/Zidane - (Ronaldo had the ability to be no.1 but injury and thyroid problems from medication put paid to that, still lethal despite reduced knee mobility and extra weight, Zidane not on the same level ability wise but very close and was fortunate to stay relatively injury free to allow his ability to be displayed on the big stage for longer. Both starred in a WC win for their country, Ronaldo could have had 2 but for strange circumstance in France which woul dhave given him 3 WC medals)

Whoa whoa steady on. As much as I might think he is the greatest, he had a canny team around him at Napoli make no mistake. Careca and Almeao were both brazilian internationals of high repute. They also had high class italian internationals such as Ciro Ferrara, De Napoli, Bagni. And lets not forget Maradona's understudy, a little fella called Zola! Would they have won it and the UEFA cup without Maradona? No. Could he have won it with any old players alongside him? Not a chance.

Fat Ronaldo for me could not get near top 5 lists. All time great in terms of ability he most certainly was. But as good as he was and could have been his star shone for far too short a period. This was partly due to injury but mainly due to his partying lifestyle which involved fast women, fast cars, drink and drugs.

Discounting Newcastle players, Zidane is the player I have most enjoyed watching ever.

In regards to the Pele/Messi debate I think Pele has a point, Pele played for almost 20 years for Santos and scored over 1000 goals, not to mention 77 goals in 92 games for Brazil. That is long term phenomenally good success. Messi has been playing for Barcelona for 6 years so you really can't look at him yet as the best player ever because you do not know what is going to happen in the next 10 years of his career. After he has finished playing then you will be able to, and while it looks at the moment like Messi is untouchable things can happen quickly in football, just look at Ronaldinho, he was amazing for Barcelona for 4/5 years but then pretty much completely went off the boil.

Not saying Messi one day will not be the greatest player ever, just saying you can't judge now. Also people rubbishing Pele's career; the goals speak for themselves.

Absolute rubbish mate he scored 1088 league goals in Brazil. Yes Garrincha was better during WC62 but the bloke spent most of his time in the pub and had horrible arthritis. There may be players who have reached a higher level than Pele for a short period but NO-ONE has match his level over the period that he did (15-20 years).

Correction: Sorry he ONLY scored 470 in 412 games, got confused by the ridiculously complicated domestic league system in Brazil!

I might get slated for this but I don't even think Messi is THAT good. Obviously a quality player but when you look at him for Barcelona, and then for Argentina, it is incomparable! The reason for this, I believe, is Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez. They are better than Messi in my opinion. They dominate every game and provide the perfect platform for Messi to play his game exactly the way he likes. When he doesn't have them at international level, he is really average. Yes, watch him, he's average (comparatively) without them.

Have to agree like Fat Ronaldo, Garrincha would struggle to get in any top 5 of mine simply because the longevity wasn't there. As with Ronaldo it was because of the drink. Died an alcoholic sadly. Did they not reckon he fathered about 40 kids! Legend for that. I think him and Ronaldo's combined would probably add up to the normal number of games a great played which sums up how short a period their star shone for.
