Brazil legend Pele, who won the World Cup in 1958, 62 and 70 has dismissed Argentina prodigy Lionel Messi as a potential threat to his legacy as arguable the world's greatest ever player. "He is a great player. When he'll have scored 1,283 goals and won three World Cups, we'll talk about it again," Pele told French newspaper Le Monde.

Is this guy for real? He's so far up his own ass its unreal. He probly counts that goal in Escape to Victory in his goals.

<laugh> ****ing love Pele, and his irrational hatred of all things Argentinean. He is in some ways right though - Messi's only 23. If he's this great for another ten years, then OK, but right now, he's not Pele.

<laugh> arrogant twat!

He has earned the right to be in fairness. He probably said it with a cheeky smile, that's how I envision it anyway.

He has a point. 1,283 is ****ing unreal.

However, two flaws:

1). The number of goals you get is dictated by how long you play for, and how long you play for has no bearing on how good of a player you are. Pele played for 21 years. How many modern strikers have careers that long these days?

2). If Messi's international team mates aren't good enough, then Argentina won't win the world cup and it isn't really Messi's fault.

I never watched Pele play for obvious reasons but for me he will never be the greatest ever player because he never played in a 'top' league.

I already count Messi and Ronaldo, Fat Ronaldo and Zidane in there. Leaves space for Maradonna.

You are joking right? His record in terms of trophies and goals is undisputably the greatest of all time. We had this argument a few months back, Pele is the greatest of all time.

"Pelé is the greatest player of all time. He reigned supreme for 20 years. All the others – Diego Maradona, Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini – rank beneath him. There's no one to compare with Pelé." - Franz Beckenbauer

Messi, Gazza, Shearer, Pele, Maradonna

Yeah boi

And yes, it is hillarious the way he goes on, especially when it comes to our Argentine friends.

He is the best player of all time, no doubt about it. Messi is second in my opinion. I agree with the post above that Pele's hatred of Argentina is hilarious!

And the fact he played half his career in the ****ing U.S.<laugh>
Now people laugh at American soccer now, think of the standard back then.

Also the Brazilian squad back then was one of the most complete international team units ever to have existed. No Pele you did not win those WCs yourself, you had legends like Socrates, Carlos Alberto, Revelinho etc playing alongside you.
The current Argentinian team is very talented but are not the unit they were, coupled with the fact the management of the Argentinian national team has been a bad joke for many years now.

Look at his scoring record, and this was a time where pitches were bobbly and the balls didnt curl into top corners as easily. Last world cup messi looked decent, but other players at that world cup out did him. He may be able to score at Barcelona but for me until he needs to show the same form at the international level like Pele and Maradonna did <ok>

Fair enough didn't realise that <ok>. I would still say that he is equal with Maradona...from bits that I have seen and that in ten years time Messi will be the best player ever (if he carries on like he has).

You are wrong regarding international level. Pele had brilliant players around him, so did Maradona, so they are obviously going to be more successful than Messi who hasn't got the same quality around him. Messi can't do it all on his own and yes I know that they have some top names at the club, but they don't gel like the old Brazil and Argentina in Pele and Maradona's days.

I'm sorry but 2 years isn't half of 21 years. Had already scored over 1000 goals before moving to US and was right at the end of his career. People already saying Messi is the greatest are talking absolute drivel - is only 23 ffs!!! Maybe he will surpass Pele, he has the potential, but he hasn't done it yet!
