Would it be better if we went up this season or if we just missed out?
Sounds like a daft question I know and like everyone else I would love us to go up this time but:
    A. If we can hold on to our best young players they will be the stars of the Championship next season.
    B. Barmby will have fully established himself by then and the players will be more familiar with his tactics etc.
    C. If we don't spend anything this window NB may have a big war chest to spend in the Summer when better players are available.
    D. Arguably the league might be a bit easier with no clear favourite (I'm thinking of West Ham this season) but I realise that's by no means definite.
Finally E. If we go up this season via the play-offs we will be seen as favourites to come straight back down (which influences the players we can attract) whereas next season our chances of going up automatically could be a lot stronger and we could have a stronger team in the Prem.

    Answer: NO

I do not believe so. We will probably have a hard time holding onto Chester, Stewart, Rosenior, Koren, to mention some!
Let's go for it and build on from there! Barmby has taken on the challenge and I believe he can do it :)

I think so too and there's no substitute for promotion but if Nick can get our best players to extend their contracts I would feel more confident going into next season than I did at the start of this one.

If we don't go up this season I think we'll lose some of our first team in the summer.

Playing devil's advocate then; if that's true should we be really pushing the boat out in this transfer window?

It would be nice this season, there's no reason why we can't make the play-offs, and we will be underestimated as per usual if we do make them. The Premiership is the place to be even if it has downsides. I think with the current management and ownership things will be done properly this time if we go up, and Nickys style of playing the game suits the higher league.

Not really bothered if we went up and came back down, unlike before, we'd be in good shape to go back up again and with a lot more money to spend. In the same way if Norwich came down now they'd be in a good position to go back up. Also, I don't really think there are any great teams this season. West Ham probably will go up because of their squad and the way they grind results out but they're no Newcastle a couple of years back that walked it.

im not that bothered about prem football , unless we continue to play young up n coming British talent.
I liked NPs ethos and long may that continue.

tho if you want promotion then its risky taking the long term look as we have seen time after time a club almost making it then falling by the wayside the next season .
Bristol City Leicester Watford recently spring to mind

    Stupid question.

If we don't go up this season it won't be out of our own choice to do so.

What kind of team would do that? You take your chance, or you fail trying. Obvious.

I can't decide if your question is sheer arrogance, or simple delusion. If we're good enough, we'll go up. If we don't go up, don't try and console yourself with "well we didn't wanna go up anyway." Ridiculous.

IMO we would be better going up next season, however getting in the play offs and losing at wembely would not be a good start

Please explain why you think a simple question is arrogant??
I made it as clear as I could on the OP and my next post that my choice would be promotion this season so why are you making this personal??
The question is just something to think about ie. whether in the cold light of day we would be better equipped to go up this season or next.

"Don't fancy promotion this year, just a bit...2012. Let's wait 'til 2014 cos that'll tie in with my 30th birthday. Double celebration!"

The question is stupid, delusional & arrogant as you seem to be suggesting we are a club who has the option to defer something as massive as promotion to a time that suits our tastes better.

"We can go up whenever we want, but some vague time in the future suits us better even though we have no crystal ball with which to predict our situation at that point. Yeah, let's **** it off this year and let some other mugs go up, we're better off another time when we can only guess what's happening. ****ing promotion dickheads. Look at them, with their immediate ambition. I'm glad we're not successful like them."

    Transcript of your brain.

Well reading that (complete with every insult you could fit in) I can only think you have a grudge against me personally because you have tried to twist everything I actually said.
I haven't insulted you in any way and I'm not rising to the bait.
I repeat the only question I have asked is will we be better equipped to go up this season or next? Where is the problem with that?

simple answer is YES...its much better to go up this season and with the amount of quality free transfers available in the summer PL status and Nick would make them happen. This squad has the quality and ability to make it happen come April. This squad would light up the PL next season if it stays together. UTT Barmby Army.

    YES.
Then next summer will not be spent worrying about losing our youngster.

For God's sake, we really do have some idiots on here. Craig was clearly simply asking, in the long term, would we be better off promoted this season or next?

Obviously every fan wants us to go up this season, we're not disputing that, so any comment along those lines is pointless.
And he clearly wasn't suggesting that if we get the chance this year, we should consider rejecting the opportunity in favour of trying next year instead.
Nor was he saying that we're guaranteed promotion either year.

All in all, it depends on too many factors for me to say. I'm not convinced we'd stay up if we were promoted this year: unless we signed several players upon getting there, particularly strikers.
We'd probably be better off building up for another year and gaining promotion next season (yes, tools, we know it's no guarantee) but that could also risk us losing our best players. Naturally I want us up this year.

See where you are coming from but I think we will have trouble keeping hold of our players in the summer unless we win promotion. It is just possible a number of heads might get turned
