"Kim Dotcom, formerly known as Kim Schmitz, and three others were arrested in Auckland, New Zealand at the request of US officials." "A federal court in Virginia ordered that 18 domain names associated with the Hong Kong-based firm be seized. " So how quick would America arrest its citizens at the bequest of another nation, how would another nation going about seizing domains from an American based and hosted company
The stupid thing is the internet is the biggest money making opportunity for the record and movie business. It's been said before, but they tried to stop sheet music being sold when pianos came out. They tried to stop the MP3 player and more. If they had succeeded in blocking the MP3 player then they would never have had iTunes, which makes them a fortune today. Added to the fact that the companies that are trying to block these P2P systems were the ones that promoted them, CNET is owned by AOL Timewarner, they distributed emule, bittorrent and many other file sharing systems with screenshots of users using the software to download copyrighted works. Also the record companies use Youtube and others to promote their music, yet if a fan uploads something to Youtube they face massive fines or jail. Finally, copyright infringement is not like theft of property, copyright law was never intended to protect intellectual property forever, anything that an artist makes becomes creative commons eventually + you don't deprive the owner of anything, the original is still there. In fact it's been proven over and over that file sharing is actually good for business as it promotes the movie or artist and many will still buy if you make it accessible and easy. Those that download stuff probably wouldn't have bought it anyway, but they will tell their friends and promote it. Authors have been caught leaking books to the pirate bay because it actually helps promote sales. If people become a big fan of somebody's work via file sharing they will quite often go to see the artist live, and buy other things. The success of Spotify and Netflix shows people pay for online content when you don't take the piss. Change your business model and get with the times record companies and movie companies.
It was never ****ed, they shut it down as a protest, get people to notice what could happen, all that ****.......
The only reason they could do it seemingly is because they had servers in VA USA, if you run anything like that, never ever get a USA server, you are just asking for trouble. mind you if this bit is true then WOW Dotcom, a resident of both Hong Kong and New Zealand, and a dual citizen of Finland and Germany, made more than $42 million from the conspiracy in 2010 alone, according to the indictment. Dotcom is founder, former CEO and current chief innovation officer of Megaupload.
A tweet: Some people drive below the speed limit. Some people drive faster. Shut down all the roads, and arrest the car manufacturers #megaupload
You are a massive hypocrite regarding this looking at your previous on other subjects. Wee guy ripping the dole off for money should be shot. Wee guy ripping music companys off should be protected.
Actually Megaupload was quite good for taking off pirated material I've tried downloading stuff from there from time to time only to find the links have been removed.
There are no legal alternatives to my tv viewing habits. I download my episodes of Dexter, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire etc the day they are released in the US - even though I pay for the full Sky package and could legally watch or record them as soon as Sky show them. I have a little PC connected to my TV running Linux (XBMC), it has bittorrent built into it and I can set my downloads up from a web browser from anywhere with an internet connection. There is no legal paid for service which gives me this much flexibility and the ability to watch the media on any device. I'm paying 70 odd quid a month for the full Sky package so I'm not against paying for content, indeed most of the stuff I download appears on Sky at some point - it's just the big American studios have no where near got their act together yet, they are too busy trying to sue the likes of myself for choosing a much better option of consuming their content than they are actually selling themselves.
Dexter is brilliant, for anyone who hasn't seen it yet - he bangs his sister right at the end of season 6
Anonymous are on the case, they have DDoS'ed the US DOJ website in response. http://thenextweb.com/insider/2012/01/19/anonymous-takes-down-doj-website-in-response-to-megaupload-case/?awesm=tnw.to_1CsQe&utm_campaign=social%20media&utm_medium=Spreadus&utm_source=Twitter&utm_content=Anonymous%20takes%20down%20DOJ%20website%20in%20response%20to%20Megaupload%20case
