Why is it pointless? It is called lowering expectations. If we get Hooper for anything less than £8m then the whole exercise will have been worth it. Also, if we went straight in with a bid of £8m it is likely Celtic would think "we can squeeze a couple more million out of this" and demand £10m.
It's pointless because no matter how low you start the bidding Celtic aren't going to accept anything less than how much they value the player. If Celtic value Hooper at £8m then it's going to take £8m to get him, anything less is pointless I know what you mean about starting low, all negotiations and circumstances are different though. It's fair enough doing that if a club needs to sell for the money and you could possibly get a bargain but Celtic don't need to sell and won't want to sell one of their best players halfway through a season
