Loved that Skalpel

Really getting into string quartets recently, very thought provoking music for me.

 

Fantastic, string quartets are easily my favourite medium. If you're looking for some of the best to go for I can give you a list of recommendations if you like. Thought I'd ask first before spamming an unwanted list of quartets in here .

19th Century:
Ludwig van Beethoven - String Quartet No. 13 & Große Fuge (in B flat, Op.130)
Ludwig van Beethoven - String Quartet No. 14 (in C sharp minor, Op.131)
Johannes Brahms - String Quartet No. 2 (in A minor, Op.51)
Franz Schubert - String Quartet No. 14 (in D minor, D.810)
Felix Mendelssohn - String Quartet No. 6 (in F minor, Op.80)

In my personal opinion, the 20th century is the era for string quartets. Don't get me wrong there are some phenominal pieces from centuries earlier, but it really began to be taken incredibly seriously as a genre from the mid 20th century onwards. They can be a little difficult to get into at times (the Ligeti I recommended is the toughest of that lot to enjoy if you're new to 20thC classical) but the rewards are far greater in my opinion.

If you're new to string quartets in general, then the best ones from those to start with would be the Shostakovich 8th, the Górecki 2nd and the Beethoven 14th.
