From a quick scour round on the internet and youtube, it seems they want to get '4chan' banned. This will not end well. At all.

I think the people will win, if it's going to effect everyone as much as people are predicting there will be total outrage. Think Anonymous have already threatened to dismantle Sony's online services for backing SOPA.

I understand when it comes to torrents that they lose money, but the amount they lose from other forms of so called piracyy will be minimal. What strikes me is that what they are trying to censor probably resulted in their profits massively increasing. Just like there profits increased with the introduction of VCR's and MP3 players, which they tried to ban.

When is this going to try and get passed? Anyone got a date?

Stuff like this really does make the future look more and more dystopian. Damn you George Orwell. Dick. <grr>

The only plus side to this is that without youtube Justin Bieber would probably be getting his head kicked in by a moose in Canada now instead of annoying the entire world.

It was first pushed in September. I'm pretty sure the whole process will be within 12 months. There's a link to the PDF of the bill on the first line of this article:

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs...t-piracy-bill/2011/10/26/gIQA0f5xJM_blog.html

(Didn't direct link to it because 2+2=4 :bandit:)

Oh, and I hope that isn't a BBC smiley you just used there.

If this gets put in place, free speech will be dead.

That's what I don't get. Surely if I post something copywrited whilst im in the Uk on a Uk server the bill has no affect on me what so ever, how can an American court claim to have any jurisdiction over me at all. I'm not an American citizen, didn't vote for their government and live thousands of miles away, I shouldn't be subject to their laws.

They might not be able to directly get you, they can completely cut off said site from the US, including search engines and advertisers, likely killing, or greatly weakening the site.

This isn't about piracy in my opinion, this is about censorship and trying to control the wild west that is the world wide web. It sets a precedent that enables them to take down just about any site they wish, directly or not.

I'm not sure exactly what was said, whether he was extremely offensively racist or said something with race hate implications. But basically you can get arrested for saying something racist in the UK. Obviously I think racism is disgusting, but freedom of speech should include any extremely stupid thing anybody wants to say.

The only problem I have with being arrested in the UK for racism is it should work both ways, which it doesn't. But this isn't the place for that discussion.

This is what I thought the case was, but I was shot down when I said it before. <laugh> Still has major implications even if they can't arrest me.

I don't think they can shut down your server, but they can remove your DNS, if people know your servers IP they can still connect, if i recall correctly.

This. Otherwise it's not freedom of speech.

DNS blocking was removed from the bill the other day.

Imagine if we beat America in the Revolutionary War, think the world be a better place?

Wikipedia is blacked out for all pages except http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act

Really? I thought that was going to be one of their major methods of policing?

How will it affect countries like Russia to? I mean they aren't the USA's biggest fans.
