My thoughts exactly! I would be so disappointed if we sign either of them; don't get me wrong they are not the worst but adding them to the other less than impressive signings is not going to get us into the top four. World class or no-one for me, save the money and spend it in the summer if need be but please do not spend the amounts suggested on either of these.

Aye, but unfortunately we don't attract quality anymore. Without top 4 this summer we will not buy anyone of known quality. I can't see our owners being happy about cashing out another £100m for dire British players so they will probs be looking at sell to buy. Looks like we are destined to be the next Aston Villa.

I don't think the fans would've been happy if the £50mill they gained wasn't immediately spent.

They definitely should have looked for another target once Newcastle started insisting on such a high price.

reports were llorente turned us down before we knocked on newkies door so time was a factor.

I do feel there was some politics in buying as intimated above and feel it was a terrible buy. We could have knocked on a lot more doors than newcastles at 30mil.

I think most fans would have been happy if Torres and Babel had gone and Suarez had come in and the club had kept the cash for summer. After all, most of them had written last season off trophy wise by December. If they'd had an extra £35m to spend in the summer, and the manager didn't feel the need not to buy a new striker cos of how much he paid for Carroll, they might be ahead of Chelsea right now.

I agree to a certain extent; the worst part of the deal for me was the fact that he was injured too so made even less sense really to rush into buying him especially at that price! Even with a bidding war between a few clubs(allegedy others were interested) it would never have reached 35mil. Of course this is all in hindsight, but the doubts were there initially and unfortunately Carrol's performances have just underlined what a poor deal it really was!

I agree - a deal like that you would expect it to have taken much longer to arrange, and for any doubt to have scuppered it given he was the record signing. I do wonder to what extent the new owners wanted to prove their credentials to the fans by showing that they would invest in the team? They may have been eager to do the business quick as a kind of proof that they were willing to invest the Torres money?

swarbs, i can't agree as you see g&H were just gone and the fans would have turned on henry if he had ended up selling for 50mil and buying only suarez... there would have been months of speculation on whether we had moeny... further suarez was cup tied.... now 35mil on a half fit player to play in the europa sound like terrible business to me too but i feel it was a facotr.

There were big doubts about the new Yanks financial intent (and intent period) at first.

That pretty much vanished with the Carroll signing. There was a lot of PR/goodwill built into the amount spent.

I always thought the Carroll signing was as much a message than a new player.
